vs. Western Michigan (11/12)

Post by mbenecke »

A massive game is upon us.

On Tuesday, November 12, our Falcons (5-4, 4-1 MAC) will host the Western Michigan Broncos (5-4, 4-1 MAC) in a game where the winner will have a clear path to Detroit for the MAC title game. This one will kick off at 7:00pm at the Doyt and be available to watch on ESPN2. Tickets are only $8, so I would highly recommend anyone that is able to get to this game in-person. The MACtion crowds are always lighter than you'd like, but this is a huge contest for our guys, and a bigger than normal Tuesday night crowd could be the difference.

WMU enters this one off their first MAC loss of the season, 42-28 at home against Northern Illinois. I don't know much about their personnel, but I'm sure someone on this board will have an idea about what they like to do and what this matchup will be like.

Go win it, Falcons!

WMU has a pair of talented running backs in Nixon & Buckley. Nixon leads in the MAC in all-purpose yardage, and has home run capability out of the backfield. He went for a 66-yard TD run last night. Hayden Wolff is their QB and is a good game manager, although he tossed two interceptions against NIU. They like to spread the ball around in the passing game, but their bread and butter is definitely the rush game.

Defensively, they've given up points to MAC opponents (42 vs. Ball State, 41 vs. Buffalo, 42 vs. NIU). Two of those were wins.

Path to victory here seems pretty simple, control their run game, don't turn the ball over, and execute on offense. Weather is looking pretty typical for November, upper 40s at kickoff and looking dry so far.

Don't shoot the messenger:

This game is now being advertised as a Black Out, and the athletic department is asking fans to wear black to the Doyt on Tuesday.

So dumb. I guess it’s fine if the students buy in and get involved but a white out or orange out would look so much better, especially at night.

Attended more games than any responsible student should have.

With it being a Tuesday game, they can call it whatever color they want to but the prevailing appearance is going to be an " Empty Seat Out".

Agree with this take, white and orange look way better on TV.

They are apparently giving away “MACtion After Dark” t-shirts to the first 2,000 students in attendance.

What are they going to do with 1700 left over t shirts?

I went to a very unfortunately scheduled Saturday night home game in November a waaaay long time ago. There were maybe 12 of us in the stands. They were giving away bottles of pop as a promo at the gate. These two kids practically mugged me and started jammimg pops into my coat. I'm thinking they got paid by the number they handed out ...my coat held like a dozen bottles..so..score

The athletic department is running a promotion to draw students to the game - a drawing where the winner gets to travel to either the Cincinnati or Louisville games next year and run on the field with the team.

I applaud the effort to get people to get the game. Not easy for a Tuesday night, but this is a huge game.

I applaud DVDM for being creative. It's a big game for the team and it should draw some eyeballs as the marquee game of the night. I'll never fault the athletic department for trying to think outside the box on the midweek games.

For students, they are also giving away sideline gear and a box for 12 people at a hockey game. They are pushing this one hard.

Students are the easiest people to get to a game, since it’s where they live and it doesn’t cost them anything. So I think pushing it hard for them is the right approach.
