Path to MAC Championship game

Post by bg1984 »

Other than winning the last 2 games, which guarantees us the trip, does anyone know what other pathway the Falcons have?

I’m interested in this too. The MAC tiebreakers seem insane, and there is still (going into tonight’s games) a potential for a 6-way tie for 1st place at the end of the season.

This website i think has the tiebreakers, you can mess around with different scenarios and see what would happen.

One path i found was us losing to ball st, beating Miami, and ohio beating Toledo next week. That gets us in the mac title vs ohio (assuming they win the other games). There are so many scenarios that could still unfold it is insane.

BG, Miami and Ohio are all 5-1 MAC

BG is at Ball St and home to Miami.
Miami hosts NIU and at BG.
Ohio is at toledo and hosts Ball St.

WMU, Buffalo and toledo are all 4-2, NIU is 3-3 and needs a miracle to reach Detroit. Everyone else is out of the race.

This upcoming game in Muncie is HUGE....business trip.

BG needs the following to happen to make it:

Win out
Ball State (L), Miami (W), need Toledo to lose one of Akron or Ohio
Ball State (W), Miami (L), need Ohio to beat Toledo and Ball State to beat Ohio
Ball State (L), Miami (W), need Miami to lose to NIU, Toledo to beat Ohio, Kent State to beat Akron, Kent State to beat Buffalo & Toledo to beat Akron, WMU to win out
Ball State (L), Miami (W), need Akron to beat Kent State, Toledo to beat Ohio, Kent State to beat Buffalo, Toledo to beat Akron, WMU to win out
Ball State (L), Miami (W), need WMU to beat CMU, Akron to beat Kent, Miami to beat NIU, Toledo to beat Ohio, Buffalo to beat EMU, Toledo to beat Akron, Kent State to beat Buffalo, CMU to beat NIU, WMU to beat EMU, the winner if Ohio/Ball State doesn't matter

Pretty sure that's all the situations, lol.

So let’s just win the last 2 and all get together at Ford Field at noon on December 7.

One of the most infuriating things is if we beat ball st then lose to Miami we most likely lose a tiebreaker. Even in a 4 way tie with western, toledo, and ohio which is very possible with the remaining games that we lose out to toledo when we are 2-0 against those teams. Also lose if you throw buffalo in that tiebreaker

BG is punished this year for playing Kent, Akron, CMU, and Ball State. It's quite the ridiculous system. Games are essentially not weighted the same if it comes down to a massive tiebreaker.

Idk how this will make more sense when UMass enters.

Wait are people complaining that if we lose to Miami (OH) at home with a chance to go to Detroit, that we should be upset that we are not going to Detroit? We didn't play Buffalo or Ohio, therefore we had the easier schedule and should get to Detroit because of that.

People are reasonably upset that Toledo could go instead of us when we won the head to head. There are even scenarios where we could lose to Ball State but then beat Miami, and one of Miami/Toledo could still go ahead of us based on ridiculous tiebreakers.

Obviously, the most ideal scenario and the one everyone is rooting for is winning out and earning our way there. Nobody is disputing that. But the fact that we have beaten teams that could then somehow take a tiebreaker over us rubs me the wrong way.

The other option would be the old divisions in which a loss to Miami would certainly mean that Bowling Green does not make it to Detroit.

At least then head to head would matter.

Obviously, with the changing landscape of college football, it's basically impossible to have a "perfect" tiebreaker scenario. But it feels like head to head should matter and be a deciding factor when comparing teams.

Going to nine conference games would better help this out, but no way the schools sacrifice either a money game, or FCS home game.
