I really like Scot as a person.

I really wish Scot would win more important football games outside of just Toledo and the random P4 upset every few years.

Saw the title and thought he was gone lol.

The good:

He deserves credit for bringing stability back to the program. I feel that's important as ever in the current unpredictable environment. He and his staff have developed some really good players who have gone pro or transferred to P4 schools. Knows the importance of the Toledo game.

The bad:

The offense feels overly complicated and struggles mightily when the players don't execute. Feels like he has too much of an NFL mentality to his coaching philosophy. It's rare BG wins comfortably. Too much Jekyll & Hyde the past three seasons.

The ugly:

No MAC Championship Game appearances. 0-3 in bowl games. 7-6 has been the high water mark which is average at best. His teams have lost important home conference games the last two seasons which is unacceptable.

He's an average coach leading a mediocre program. His salary is affordable for BG and he's won seven games each of the last two years, so he's not going anywhere soon. He's on par with Chris Creighton at EMU which is meh.

He’s a fraud. It could be worse, they could be bad. But I think we’ve seen as good as it’s gets from him, which is slightly above mediocrity. He said he could win the MAC year 1 but he wanted to do it the right way, the is year 7 of doing it the “right way.”

I think it's great that he always salutes the "toughness" of his QB's because they get their brains beaten out running his slow developing offense behind a s**t offensive line. It's...inspiring

I think similarly to last year, the level of expectation will be as follows:

5 or less wins: Gone
6 wins: 80% likely gone
7 wins: 70% likely stays
8 wins or more: 100% stays or moves to another job

Personally, I'd prefer it to be: Make it to the MAC Championship or get out of here. I do not think that will be the ultimatum.

Agreed. I think as a department right now, we're pretty content just having an average, winning football team. Taking major steps back won't be tolerated, but I don't think the real expectation is there to be championship or bust, especially with the roster turnover for this season.

2024 should've been the year, though. With everyone coming back, that was the time to do it. So now part of me thinks it will never happen, or won't for a long time until we get the perfect storm again. But even then... no guarantees it wouldn't go the same as last year.

My patience with having 6-7 or 7-6 seasons is wearing thin. I'm happy we aren't a dumpster fire anymore (this is WAY better than we were when I was in school during the Jinks years), but it feels like it's either time to be something more or find someone who can do that for us.

He's Gregg Brandon 2.0. The only concern I have is he has really brought in and developed some really talented players, yet 7-5 is that best we can do? I think that's where the uneasiness comes from, this year should have been a 9-3 season, 8-4 at the very worst. The fact that we only won 7 games with that amount of talent leaves a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths. Losing to ODU and NIU should have never happened

As the world-renowned Brandon hater, Loeffler can't carry Brandon's jock as a coach. Not X's & O's offensively, especially.

Looking back, I was probably too hard on Brandon holding him to the standard of Urban Meyer. But that was also an era where BG football was not content in this Loeffler bullshit. Brandon only had one losing season in his tenure, losing his job because he went 24-24 in his final 4 seasons. Loeffler has only won 27 in his 6 years here.

Brandon slid into mediocrity after his prize QBs after Omar (Turner was next, I think) started to really fall off. His penchant to put no resources on defense really started to hurt when his offense wasn't as electric. Eventually it was mediocrity and off field issues that sent him packing.

Of course he did all this in a MAC era where he was matching up with NFL draft picks (and eventual HoF players) pretty frequently. It's really not even possible to compare the MAC then to the MAC now, it's 2 different sports.

Nice article. It was best for him to move on to an NFL gig. He was too obsessed with the game itself to balance all of the needs of the FBS world nowadays. I thought the example of him always wanting players to have multiple contingency plans was a great example of his expectations being a bit too high for the skill set he was dealing with.

Good for Scot. They got the win last night. Have no reason to dislike him, but I still think he's the perfect example of all that is wrong in football coaching/hiring.

An already developed Hurts will probably continue to play well and next thing we know Loeffler will be an OC candidate in the next NFL hiring cycle...smh
