You know....I watched both AFL games this past Sunday and it was actually pretty interesting. I just heard the other day that Canton is getting an arena team, but it is a new league....the AIFL (Atlantic Indoor Football Leauge). They are going to be the Canton Legends and start play in April. Should be kinda interesting.

I would think CANTON of all places would lie their allegiance only with the NFL, but stranger things have happened... Hell - I'm still waiting for my Brownies to win the Super Bowl.

canton's going to have a team for two reasons: it's football, and it will generate revenue in a building that sits mostly empty for the better part of the year. since the invaders and the npsl (which was headquartered in canton) left town, the canton civic center is basically used for just a few things: HOF festivities in july/august (for which the city receives no revenue from renting the civic center), high school commencements, and a portion of the ohsaa basketball tournament. there are a few more scattered dates when things like small time car shows, gun shows, etc. might come to town, but the city really needs something to bring money in to that building. they've tried minor league hockey recently, but that never took off, and they never even played a game in the civic center, so arena football seems like the next best thing, even if it is B-List arena football.
about ten years ago, a man name guy cicchini (for whom i worked for a few summers) tried to buy a team from orlando and move it to canton in the "original" arena football league. the league sort of folded, so he never made the deal. it's adifferent group of investors that'll own this team.

So now there is at least the AFL, AIFL (Canton Legends) and the UIF. BTW, the Lexington Horsemen won the UIF title this past season, not that anyone cares. Anyways, here's something else on the UIF (United Indoor Football) about the great Ickey Woods.

January 28, 2005 - Dayton, OH-Former Cincinnati Bengals running back, Ickey Woods, will be helping to host the Dayton Warbirds’ Hot Dance Moves II Contest this Friday night January 28, 2005 at The Dive Beach Club in Fairborn.

Woods will be in Dayton to support the Dayton Warbirds professional indoor football team, but he won’t be alone. He is bringing some of his own players to the event.

Since leaving the NFL, Woods has since made a name for himself as the Owner/ Head Coach of the Cincinnati Sizzle, Cincinnati’s Professional Women’s Football Team. Several Sizzle players will also be in attendance at the Dive on Friday Night.

This is the second Hot Moves Dance Contest for the Dayton Warbirds, with the winner of the contest having the opportunity to audition for the Warbirds’ Flygirlz dance team in February.

“Once known for his ‘Ickey Shuffel’ touchdown dance, Woods should be able to add some moves to the contest on Friday night,” Warbirds Owner Jeffery Jodway said. “This is a great opportunity for fans to meet an NFL legend as well as some Warbirds players,” Jodway added.

The Warbirds kick off their inaugural season March 17th at the Nutter Center. Season tickets are on sale now. For more information on the Warbirds, please visit their website at www.daytonwarbirds.com or call the office at (937) 427-9737.
