Isn't it against NCAA rules for coaches to talk to an athlete before they sign their letter of intent? I thought it was but can someone tell me the correct rules. The reason I am asking this is because I was listening on my satellite radio, and the channel was out of Miami and they were talking about college signees. One name came up. Ryan Perrilloux. He is a quarterback and verbally agreed to go to Texas. Then yesterday, at the last minute, he decided to sign with LSU. His reasoning according to the radio announcer was that his friends were playing for other SEC schools and he wanted to compete against them. He supposedly told LSU this. According to the reporter, he was also asked by LSU what it would take for him to come to their school, and he said if they played certain teams on their schedule. Sounds like he had some contact with school officials. Isn't this tampering????? Was just wondering.

Coaches talk to recruits before they sign their letters of intent--how do you think they recruit? They can keep talking to players even after verbals are given--nothing's official until the letter is signed. Many times players de-commit and sign with a different school.

As long as its not in the NCAA "dead periods", I don't see how it could be. Verbals mean nothing more than an idea of where a kid's going to go. Most of the time, they prove to be true, but its not a "contract" or anything until they sign on Signing Day. As long as it was a school official that is approved to recruit, there shouldn't be anything wrong with it. And football coaches have enough pull that if he tells a coach, "you know, playing against my friends would be cool, but I really want the chance to play against Oklahoma, too, and you don't provide that", if the kids that much of a prize, you better believe the coach is going to be pounding on the AD to schedule Oklahoma.

Actually no they cant. Coaches and/or rep from an institution may only contact the player or a family member once before they attend a campus visit. Then after that the coaches can only contact you once per week. However, within 48 hours prior to you signing your letter of intent they can contact you as often as they like. So then on Monday and Tuesday, the LSU coaches don't let the kid's phone stop ringing and promise him they'll do everything they can to play the teams he wants to play against.

Oh I dont see a problem now. I didn't realize they had that 48 rule in the rules. I knew they could only contact an athlete once a week, but I didn't realize you could call someone up 48 hours prior.

There was a dead period up until today, I think.....of course once a kid signs his letter you can talk to him and you cna talk about him, but I think all in person contact with potential recruits was a no no after Jan 30th.

I tried calling the recruiting line on Monday to confirm the time on the announcement reception. The machine answered and advised me that if I was a potential recruit, all contact with me was barred by NCAA rules.

We had one signee that got calls from Illinois late in the signing period. He committed to us early and felt that Illinois was looking for bodies.
It is not unusual for schools to call recruits late even if they have already verballed to another school.

plus there are no restrictions on any contact initiated by the recruit, either by phone or in person.
