This is rather interesting. Anyone happen to see the recruits Marshall has coming in next year. I know they are leaving the MAC, but they are not picking up and moving their campus. They did not recruit ONE player from their own state. Also only recruited ONE player from Ohio. Guess no one if they home state wants to play for them.

But for what its worth, West Virginia only recruited 4 players from their own state. Guess to many hillibillies and rednecks down there would rather drink some moonshine rather than play college ball. Uh ha I reckon.

West Virginia is not exactly a fertile ground for talent. Marshall has traditionally focused in Virginia, Tennessee and other parts of the south -- regions in which they used to play as a member of the Southern Conference.

Typically, they will take a few from West Virginia and one or two from Ohio. No more.

Its hard to find players with all their teeth, fingers, and toes in WV... they do their best with what they have.

Plus non-qualifiers come from anywhere they can get them...prisons, mental hospitals, Florida State, Virginia Tech...

Then again, who cares? I'm glad the cheaters are gone. I'm drinking a few brewskies tonight and feeling frisky. Screw the Herd.

POLK'S MARSHALL PLAN

Marshall, which moves into Conference USA this fall, will have a strong Polk County presence. Former Auburndale running back Chubb Small signed with Marshall in January, and he'll be joined by his former teammate Dedrick Davis.

At Auburndale, Davis played nearly everywhere -- quarterback, wide receiver, running back, punter, linebacker, defensive back, kick returner and punt returner. He'll be a safety in college.

"It really didn't matter where I play," Davis said. "I'll play anywhere."

Davis is undecided about his major.

"This is a great opportunity," Auburndale coach Bob Williams said. "Marshall got a great player."

Actually, Marshall got a few great players from Polk. Joining the Auburndale duo will be Kathleen's defensive end duo of Darrell Lake and Albert McClellan.

The pair signed together amid a crowd of family members at mid-morning.

Lake, who will major in sports medicine, got a first-hand look at sports injuries this season. It was a frustrating senior season for Lake, who missed about five games with a knee injury.

The injury didn't hurt his college prospects. In high school, he formed one of the best defensive end tandems the county has ever had.

"It's been great playing with Albert, and I'll still be playing with him in college," Lake said.

Lake committed to Marshall in mid-January. McClellan made his decision at the last minute after Georgia, his first choice, fell through. McClellan was a firstteam, All-State selection as a senior. Not as big as Lake, who's about 245, McClellan at 215 was quick and one of the fastest players on the team.

In college, he'll play at about 235 pounds. He wants to major in computer engineering. So what impressed him most about Marshall? The library and the dorms.

There really weren't that many top players from the state this year. The four best in-state guys are going to WVU (Nate Sowers, Zac Cooper, Reed Williams, Ryan Dawson).

Morgantown High had three kids go D-I... K Patrick Shadle (who BG was recruiting) signed with Syracuse, RB Spencer Farley (over 2,000 yds and 55 TDs) signed with Ohio U. and WR Migel Lockett chose I-AA SE Missouri St.

There are a couple guys here and there that will either walk on at WVU or may get looks elsewhere, but it seems as if the in-state talent wanted no part of the Herd this year. Can you really blame them?

The state of West Virginia is not a football powerhouse, never has been. That is why Marshall does not recruit WV players. Several will walk on. And someone was correct saying WVU only recruited 4. Thats just the facts. We focus on Tennessee, Virginia, Florida, Ohio, etc.

Oops I forgot to mention that I gave the tours of the library to the recruits each weekend (have worked there for three years as a student assistant). come on down to marshall's library, you won't be making jokes about coloring books.
