Holy Cow!! Perry beats out Carswell....

According to The Blade, Deaudre Perry beat out TJ Carswell at FS!! I personally think that's a little surprising. If Perry was that good, and our secondary has improved that much, then we would have an absolute killer D, IMO.

That's good news that there is competition in camp, but Carswell is a helluva player, we need to find him a spot on the defense. Do you think we can move him back to LB this year, he may be a little small but man he can hit with the best of them. If not then we are going to be loaded in the secondary this year.

Coach Brandon also said that "we'll evaluate that again after today because Deaudre gave up a couple of big plays." I wouldn't be suprised to see Coach Brandon flip the depth chart in that secondary again before next Saturday. I think this competition is a good thing and will only make our defense stronger. We have alot of talent in that defensive backfield, but some of them just need some experience in a game situation. Mayberry, Perry, and Arnold are all good DB's, but they haven't been in too many pressure situations at BG yet.

That could be a back and forth competition that continues all season. They are probably just challenging both players at this point, but it's great to have that problem. I heard great things about Perry: very fast, the right size, hard hitter, and football smarts.

I'd maybe like to see them split time in the secondary. If one is better in certain defensive sets, then I think that would be a great idea. Sure we use the 4-3 most of the time (unless that has changed), but Carswell is a great player and I just hate to see him sit. No offense to Mr. Perry with that comment because I've never seen him play. Did anyone notice Perry playing at the scrimmage or see him at any practices and if so, how did he look?

Why not Perry at SS??

Interesting....I know Perry was one of our prize recruits last year but TJ? Man, I love that kid!! He'll pop ya in the mouth EVERY time. Carswell needs to be on the field. He's too good not to be out there.

GO FALCONS!!!

5+ days!!!!

To play the pragmatist here ...

I love TJ, but even the announcers on one of the TV games (man, I love using a plural for that :D ) last year noted that he needed to stop playing like a converted linebacker. I think that's true. TJ can hit like a ton of bricks, which you would expect from a former LB, but too often looked lost on pass coverage.

Since we intended to have the lead through most games this season - :D - the other teams will be throwing a lot. We need to develop the next Patton (or next Newsom for that matter).

I think TJ would be a great linebacker in the nickel package or in our base defense in passing situations.

I also think this is a great illustration of just how well Coach B is recruiting and how quickly the program is developing!

It's a very smart coaching move. You need to show the kids that they can take a job if they work hard enough and you need to show your seniors that that "S" next to their name on the roster isn't a gaurentee of playing time.

Carswell is the type of kid, based on what what I've heard, who won't let a move like this get in his head and effect his play. Perry, by all accounts, isn't the kind of kid who'll let it go to his head.

In fairness to Carswell, he played safety until last year when he was moved to LB to cover for injuries. He was then moved back to safety for the end of the year. I don't blame him for having problems with angles and pursuit because making a switch back and forth like that is not an easy task.

I think this is a great thing and I really like TJ and he is one of my favorite players. We all know TJ is a solid player. So if Perry can step up and play over him, we may have more depth in the secondary than we originally thought.
