Maybe some of you remember a couple times Falconfreak90 mentioned that youngstown sportscasters and writers use to talk about YSU like they would win the MAC. Granted this was at least when they were a good 1-AA team.
Things have not changed. I was watching the Youngstown news the other night and this guy asked YSU's athletic director "Do you think schools like Akron, Bowling Green, and (can't remember the third MAC school he mentioned) are afraid to play YSU?" The AD was not as stupid as the the reporter as he said "The main reason is we are an 1-AA team and they are 1-A teams."
How could anyone be so brainless to think Youngstown St. would strike fear into any 1-A team? Youngstown St. is a bad 1-aa team. I think they went 3-8 last season with one vistory against a division II team. We should be scared if these guys are ever on our schedule.

Just for info, YSU was 5-7 and most of that talk of YSU winning the MAC was when Tressel was there, YSU always beaten Kent, Akron, Eastern Michigan, and even West Virgina One year.
Since tressels departer, YSU has gone 8-3, 7-4, 7-4, 5-7. At this Time YSU and coach Heycock would not compete to well in the MAC.
ALso just for note in 01 YSU just lost to #16 Marshall 31-24 in OT, and beat kent again in 03. Making there record vs Kent 6-4 overall and has a 24-9 game series lead with Akron.
YSU was not allow in the mac in 1997 because Kent, Akron, Toledo, & Miami were all against, because at the time YSU would have beaten most of the MAC just like Marshall did!!!!!!!!
Don't crack on YSU I am a Big Fan of them I am from the area a still hold season tickets, I also love BGSU & OSU.

As far as I know, only Kent and Akron were against their moving up into the MAC. Largely due to the regionalism. Probably all due to the regionalism. I have never seen anything in print that says Miami and Toledo were against it. I could be wrong though.

I have some of the programs from 1997 and it mentions Miami & Toledo, as part of the prtest against YSU, and YSU in 97 did beat UCF and went on to a it's Fourth National Title
Personally I want YSU to stay a 1-AA team. The Gateway Conference is tough, and we play for National Titles, aslo Stambaugh Stadium only holds 22,000, with a average draw the past two years of 17,000. So the stadium would have to expand to meet 1-A standards, even thow YSU's average draw is bigger than Kent & Akron

Don't get upset with me, I am not the person who said Bowling Green is afraid to play YSU. I'm going stick up for MAC schools when some idiot says that MAC teams are afraid of the present YSU. I don't care how good YSU use to be. They are not good anymore. The Tressel days are history and every indication is that it is going keep on getting worse. I went to a couple of their games last season. They are lousy at best. If you want to see boring football, YSU is the place. They went 4-7 last season and 5-7 in 2003(we were both wrong on their record in 04) and one of those wins was against slippery rock (div II). FYI YSU did not beat Kent in 03, it was close but they lost. Also that game against Marshall in 2001 did not go into overtime, Marshall won by 14. For being such a huge fan you don't have your facts straight.
I agree that the YSU of five years ago could compete in the MAC. They could not anymore. People in Youngstown still act like Tressel is going come back and save them. Their national title days are over. It's progressively getting worse and there are still people with theit heads in the clouds thinking they are a national power.
YSU vs. Marshall

IMHO - YSU would not have "Marshall-ed" the MAC. Marshall's last year in I-AA, they stumbled on to Randy Moss, and already had Chad Pennington. They destroyed everyone that year. I believe their final sagarin rating was 15(?)
They came into the MAC with two future NFL stars on their team; the MAC was at its weakest in 8 years. (BSU Punter Brad Maynard was the league MVP, for crying out loud)
Marshall had great timing.
Before Marshall came along the best success any I-AA team in their first year had was the 6-5 Nevada Wolfpack we faced in the Las Vegas Bowl in 1992.
We won that game 35-34 (I was there

) so I know YSU would have been competitive, but I doubt you will see any I-AA team do what Marshall did.

Every MAC team should be afraid to play YSU. It is a lose lose situation for them and YSU is a traditionally dangerous team. It is the same reason OSU is afraid to play BG. If you win you were suppossed to. If you lose, you lost to a team that is not even division I-A. (I made a mistake here and originallytyped Division I and did not add the A. I apologize to all of those who could not understand what I meant. I can see where that would have been difficult had you not read any of the rest of my post or any of the rest of this thread. In context sure it makes total sense and you can clearly understand the meaning. But who here has time to read an entire post and thread in order to understand what someone meant when that someone made an error in one sentence.)

If I-AA is not Division I, then what is it?
It's not Divison II.
It's not Divison III.

Oh my gosh, I am sorry. I messed up a word and the dimwitted amongst us could not understand the basic logic of the post. Clearly I meant Division 1-A. I can't beleive what an error I made. And such a difficult one to weed through and realize what I meant. I apologize greatly. It is good of you to take the time to respond to my post. Your life must be very full.

They are not anymore. YSU football is on the decline.

In general, I think we can all agree that MAC teams should avoid playing any DI-AA school and it has nothing to do with fear, but it is, as G-fitch points out, a lose-lose situation.
Lose to any D-IAA school and get ridiculed. Even if it's a close win, you're going to get some scrutiny. Blow them out and everyone figures it was a gimme anyway.
And it does nothing for SOS for the team in question or the conference.

YSU hasn't won the Gateway Conference ONCE. When I lived in the Ytown area, these people thought YSU would beat OSU. They would ridicule the MAC (Pete Mollica of the Ytown Spindicator was a jackass all the time) saying how YSU would win the MAC every year. In 1995, defending MAC champ CMU went into Stambaugh and ripped the 'Guins by 3 td's on their "Ice Castle" home turf...and CMU ended up 4-7 that year.
Anyway, YSU is nothing like when Tress was there. And like Kdog said, getting worse every year.
Talk about "living in the past".

The question was not are we more talented and a better team than YSU. It is would the MAC teams be scared to play YSU. And that answer would have to be yes because there is everything to gain and nothing to lose. We are not afraid of their ability, but rather what a loss means to us should one happen.

Youngstown State is SWMS or Tennessee State or anyone else we have had on our schedule because someone chickened out (USF sucks)
No fear at all.
