Doesn't surprise me much, he's seemed like an "up and comer" since the day he got here.

We only got him because of a completely goofy situation in Colorado. We were lucky to have him for a year.

And all the wonderful things he did for our cornerbacks, too...

I was thinking the same thing earlier...just didn't want to be the first to say it!

You don't know how they would have played if someone else coached them.

Yeah...NFL teams always look for the worst possible coaches...

Yes, there are bad NFL coaches...they arn't hired with the notion that they are bad coaches. Some people on this board seem to have the opinion that coach Joseph is a bad coach. Apparently, people who are paid to evaluate coaching talent feel otherwise.
Given the choice, I'll back them.

I don't think that one season is enough to evaluate any kind of coaching abilities, either. Getting a job has as much to do with connections as ability sometimes. I think Joseph needed an "out" from the mess at Colorado, BG provided that, and he likely has someone in the SF organization that knows him or his work and wanted to bring him aboard.

Right. We bailed him out from a bad situation, and in return we got a much better coach than we would have ordinarily gotten. Could Vince Lombardi have gotten Jelani Jordan to cover better?

With as poorly as our secondary has played this year and last year against Miami... Is this really a bad thing?

FWIW, Joseph wasn't here for the two Miami disasters in '03.
Without trying to either defend or accuse anyone of anything, how much does the DB coach have to do with the actual schemes in the secondary in our system? It's a serious question because I really don't know. Like some others have mentioned, I kind of feel like most of the situations where either of our corners got burned were when we were in cover 2 and the safety bit on a fake or missed an assignment, leaving the corner up a creek. I KNOW I saw at least a few cases throughout the season where that was clearly what happened. I'm not denying that plenty of improvement could be made, I just wouldn't pin it all on the corners or their coach.
I don't really want to get into this too much, but those are just some things to consider.

Are we concluded that this guy is a good coach just because an NFL team hired him? That's jumping the gun I think. I can only go off of what I saw last season and there was no improvement in the secondary from 03 to 04, and there was a lot of experience back there.
I don't equate NFL coaches with college coaches anway. A lot of good college coaches make bad NFL coaches and vice versa.
