Some love for Omar

I'm a big "mid-major" fan and love rooting for the underdogs. The athletes of the mid-major schools usually don't get the respect and attention that the other athletes receive in major conferences. Which athletes playing in a mid-major program will be making a lot of "noise" this year and why is it that these athletes chose not to play for a major conference team if they were recruited by one? I know it's usually for personal reasons but I'm always curious about how they made their decision. – Scott

A: Nine times out of ten a player goes to a “mid-major” because he wasn’t recruited by one of the big boys. The others choose a “mid-major” to either play right away or play the position they want to. What quarterback wants to go to Michigan and sit behind Chad Henne for a few years when he can put up big numbers at a MAC school and try to become the next Ben Roethlisberger or Byron Leftwich? Sometimes a big school wants a recruit to play defensive back when he can be a running back, or the position he wants to play, at a "mid-major". As far as this season, Bowling Green QB Omar Jacobs and Toledo QB Bruce Gradkowski will be the biggest “mid-major” stars. There are still the running backs, Patrick Cobbs and Jamario Thomas, down in North Texas each boasting an NCAA rushing crown. The probable top ten “mid-major” stars for 2005 meaning they’ll get the most national pub: 1) Jacobs, 2) Gradkowski, 3) Cobbs/Thomas until one gets most of the carries, 4) Boise State QB Jared Zabransky, 5) Northern Illinois RB Garrett Wolfe, 6) UAB QB Darrell Hackney, 7) Houston QB Kevin Kolb, 8) UTEP QB Jordan Palmer 9 & 10) Memphis RB DeAngelo Williams and New Mexico RB DonTrell Moore will be 1 and 2 if they’re 100% healthy.
