Here is the MAC:
Writeups by Richard Cirminiello
Best Coach – Frank Solich, Ohio – By Big XII standards, Solich became a lightning rod for criticism after replacing Tom Osborne at Nebraska. By MAC standards, he’s a coaching legend. In nearly a quarter-century in Lincoln, Solich recruited future first-round draft choices, tutored Heisman winners and coached in national championship games. Typically, coaches leave the MAC to fulfill those kinds of experiences. Solich is bringing them, and a wealth of knowledge, to the conference.
Most Underrated – Joe Novak, Northern Illinois – Just three wins in his first 33 games in DeKalb nearly kept Novak from even getting to this point. However, he’s rebounded with five consecutive winning season and the school’s first bowl game in 21 years, repaying the administration’s patience and building a very stable foundation for the Huskies. He’s an old-schooler, who develops talent as well as any other coach in the MAC.
Most Overrated – Tom Amstutz, Toledo – Amstutz has certainly been good for the Toledo program, but as defensive-minded coaches go, his teams haven’t stopped anyone the past four years; last year’s squad surrendered over 400 points. The Rockets’ run of three Motor City Bowls in four years has been firmly built on Rob Spence’s offense, and now that the coordinator is off to Clemson, it should be interesting to see how Amstutz’s team responds.
Coach on the Hot Seat – Jim Hofher, Buffalo – No one else in the MAC is even remotely in trouble, so the dubious distinction falls to the coach with the 7-39 career mark. Hofher is making nominal gains with the Bulls, but unless that starts translating into wins, he’s going to get sacked by the school, and buried under the New Jersey Meadowlands.
Bucking for a Promotion – Gregg Brandon, Bowling Green – Brandon’s done a magnificent job continuing the momentum Urban Meyer created in 2001 and 2002. The Falcons have won 20 games the past two years, including back-to-back bowl wins for just the second time in school history. The rapid development of quarterback Omar Jacobs on Brandon’s watch is proof he’s not simply thriving off Meyer’s kids.
Best Offensive Coordinator – Shane Montgomery, Miami – Miami was wise to promote Montgomery to head coach after Terry Hoeppner resigned to take over the Indiana program. Despite being only 37, he’s proven to be one of the best young minds in the game, and a key reason the RedHawks are their best stretch in years. Had Montgomery not gotten the job, another school almost certainly would have robbed the Cradle of Coaches.
Best Defensive Coordinator – Tim Beckman, Bowling Green – As explosive as the Falcon offense has been lately, it’s easy to lose sight of the work Beckman has done with the defense. His unit is consistently among the league leaders in many statistical categories, namely turnovers. Beckman’s defenses feature a multitude of wrinkles, which can create havoc for opposing quarterbacks.
Best Off-season Hire – Solich – In what parallel universe would an Ohio Bobcat coach ever make an appearance on ESPN2’s Cold Pizza? Solich has the name recognition to get the school the kind of exposure that would have been untouchable for some Big Ten assistant or I-AA coach looking for a salary bump.
Worst Off-season Loss – Terry Hoeppner, Miami – Before accepting the head job at Indiana, Hoeppner was on the verge of building a perennial MAC power at Miami. In six seasons, he won 48 games, earned a pair of bowl invites and finished No. 10 in the AP poll in 2003. Toledo offense coordinator Rob Spence, now at Clemson, will also be a tough act to follow.

Now this statement might not get the same response at AZZ.com as it would on MiamiHawkTalk, but I would say that is a pretty near-sighted remark from Mr. Cirminiello. Perhaps a Redskin could email him and enlighten him to likes of Woody, Bo, Ara, or heck even Doyt.FirelandsFalconFan wrote:Here is the MAC:
