I definately think Josh's number deserves to be retired after what he did for the program. He brought us out of the MAC cellar, to our first bowl game in what seems like forever, and broke about every passing record in school history. what do you guys think about making josh's number the second number to be retired?

A year ago, I would have given it some consideration for sometime down the road, and after a small handful of others. Now I'm not so sure, seeing what Omar's likely to do with the QB side of the record book.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm not big on retiring numbers, but Brian McClure is probably at the front of the line for the next one to go on the shelf.

I would agree. I'm not much on retiring numbers. You certainly have to wait 5-10 years after a player finishes before making the call. You can end up like the Yankees with more self-aggrandizing retirements than anyone needs.

Honestly, I don't think he did any more or had better stats than Brian McClure. I agree, that retiring a number should be done "years" later, to see how it stacks up in the "long run".

Erick White was a two time MAC player and led the team to two MAC championships and two bowl wins. I've never heard anyone mention retiring his number. Josh was a great quarterback, but retire his number? Get serious. Maybe we should rename the stadium after Urban.

Exactly what I'm getting at. Erik White is in line behind McClure if they start retiring numbers, and that's just the QB's. While we all love Josh and appreciate what he did in leading this team on an unbelievable resurgence, by the time Omar, then perhaps Turner, and whoever comes next, Harris' numbers alone might appear average.

I like the approach the University has taken as a whole with retiring numbers across the board with the athletic program. The analogy to the Yankees is true, and I hope we don't turn into that (and really, I don't see it happening). I do, however, wish they'd find a way to honor BG Hall of Famers in a more obvious manner at each of their facilities. The trophy case at the Ice Arena was always one of my favorite things to skim over when I was out there.

You are putting too much recency bias into your thinking. He was a special QB but J5 was not even first team all mac, and won zero conference championships.

And I thought this thread was about Teddy Piepkow.

I've never figured why Paul Miles' #29 was retired. Excellent running back (three 1,000 yard seasons on teams that didn't throw much) but no championships. His post BG football career consisted of playing in the WFL. Barring injury, P.J. Pope's numbers should end up better than Miles'.

Well, just a note, freshmen weren't eligible during the Miles era, so you can't compare his numbers to Pope's. FWIW, he was only the second college runner to get 1,000 yards in each of his three seasons. He was my first sports hero, but having said that, he's more an argument for why you don't jump right on retiring numbers.

Yeah, I was going to bring up Miles. I don't know when they retired his number, but shortly after he left BG, Dave Preston wiped alot of his rushing marks off the board.

Do I remember hearing here or somewhere else that he's now a blues/jazz musician and has come back recently to play at the Black Swamp Festival?

Yes, Miles performed at the Black Swamp this year which was also a football weekend and he performed at the doyt in an alumni tent as well.

I still think of #49 first. It's a better linebacker # anyway.

J.H. is definetly a note-worthy name in BG history, but I'd have to side with everyone else here and say wait for five years and see if it's a good idea.
