A few of my depth chart observations:

- Lichtensteiger is staying at guard. I think Brandon mentioned this in a story in the Blade the other tday. Moving him to center would create new starters at 4 OL position. Keeping him at guard only means three new starters.

- Markray is back at guard. I thought he moved to tackle during last season.

- Williams has moved from DT to DE.

- Winovich is listed third at MLB. I don't understand what we are doing with him. He is supposed to be such a great athlete. We wasted his redshirt so he could play on special teams. Then we move him to LB to take advantage of his skills, yet he is third on the depth chart? :?

- Haneline is third at the WILL. Woulnd't be surprised to see him move up.

- Diyral Briggs is now fourth at SAM. Wasn't he a DE last year? Again, why are we moving guys so they can be third or fourth on the depth chart?

- No Perry on the depth chart, but he is still listed on the roster.

- True Freshman Luke Alexander (enrolled in Jan) is already #2 at the X receiver.

Don't get too hung up on Winovich, he is a true Athlete in the sense of classifying him as that on the roster, no matter what position he is listed at he will be able to help at various places during various times of a game/season. I don't know if his redshirt was wasted for special teams last year.....he made some big plays.

What?

Briggs was a DE. Interesting that they moved him to LB since our DL lost some depth. And he's listed as FOURTH behind another RS Freshman. Maybe he hasn't developed as many of us had expected/hoped. We'll see where he's at in September.

On Winovich, I agree that if he's sitting at third on the depth chart when the season opens, I will be mightily disappointed. However, he's behind two seniors now, so I wouldn't be surprised for him to be getting a lot of significant PT by the time Toledo visits the Doyt.

Looks like Dozier and Waldron will play prominent roles, too.

Other things I found interesting ...

 Timchenko will be the kicker and he's a RS Jr. ... for some reason I had it in my head that he'd be a senior this year.

 Turner takes over for Cole as the holder.

 Boy we look young on offense, especially once you get past the starters.

 Van Johnson listed at CB ... is that news or has that been discussed here before?

Ummm, where hasn't Johnson played in his BG career?

Another thing that I just realized is that we only go two-deep at QB. Wonder why that is, especially when most postions have at least three (RB has five! )

In fact, Turner & Jacobs were the only ones listed at QB on the alphabetical roster, too. Yikes.

Also, did you notice Winovich is still listed as a TE on the alphabetical roster?

With our QB depth now, this is the best place for him. It hadn't been mentioned that he'd officially be put there but most of us assumed it. With Keon gone, we can use all the help we can get at DB!

Remember that we still have some freshmen coming in for the fall. Many of them won't make an immediate impact, but they are bodies to put on the depth chart if we need them. Barnes will probably be the third QB on the depth chart, but hopefully we won't have to use his redshirt.

You're probably right. I forgot all about Barnes. If that's the case, it would be great to be able to redshirt him this year. If we do as well as I expect us to do, Turner should get plenty of playing time in mop-up duty.

I wonder, though, if Turner will get frustrated at riding the bench for two full seasons, assuming Omar uses all of his eligibility. Likewise with Barnes.

Just looking ahead.

One would hope that Turner would understand that he's learning from a great QB. If Turner sticks it out, he will get his PT in mop up duty and will end up taking over a great offense.

I think Turner understood what was going on when he got here...he'll be patient. Sadly, it might be only one year.

Saw Coach Beckman at Marble Slab tonight (mmmmmmmmmmmm), and he told the people the worker there his voice was hoarse from his first day of yelling.

I hope Turner is coming to camp with every intention of pushing Omar HARD for the number one job. I don't think he was recruited to sit and I don't think he's coming here with the idea of sitting.

The notion that Omar could leave for the NFL with a nother buig year under his belt has to be part of his thinking too.

Winovich and Haneline aren't third on the depth chart...they're both tied for second (see that little "or"...I think a lawyer did these charts)

Overall, our starting Dline looks really good...maybe the best in the league.
The back ups are all unproven commodities though. The LB core looks to be similary situated. The starers are talented and experinced, but who knows about the back ups.

The secondary is the defense's most experienced unit. There are questions about the talent level though. Were our problems defending the deep ball really a schematic problem, or were they a talent issue? We had the same issue in 2001, 2002 and 2003 with different personnel, so maybe it is a schematic issue.

Kind of suprised to see Hutcherson on the depth chart.

Really looking forward to the spring game. Omar is going to have a slew of new WR's to throw to...it'll be interesting to see how they mesh.
