It looks like there is a chance Wisconsin may play us in 1962 throwback jerseys.

If so, I would expect Bowling Green to also consider getting throwback jerseys.

Last year, Iowa put on 1939 jerseys for their opener against Kent State. The Flashes responded by putting on these jerseys, from their 1972 MAC championship season:

This raises an interesting question: If we did go with throwback jerseys, what year would we throw back to?

1959 seems the obvious answer to me -- or, if we don't want to be as daring, 1985.

The shame of it all is that this game won't be played at home. If it was, our jerseys would be BROWN.

This is said to be a replica of the helmet Bowling Green wore in 1960. It's possible this was also the 1959 helmet:



If team went with a throwback uniform from the early 1960s (and it could be justified; there were several MAC titles in that era), that would be an excuse to revive some of the strangest helmets ever to hit the college gridiron:



Apparently, before the season started, someone at BGSU took a silouette of a Falcon, placed it on an orange helmet, and then spray painted with white before the silouette was peeled away. The white splotches tended to be very irregular from one helmet to the next.

That would be something to see again.

Hey! I love Notre Dame. They only spray paint their helmets because they use 24 karat gold paint that was recycled from the inside of the Cathedral. Cut them some slack. It's a Catholic thing.

Schad- It is interesting to note that for that 2004 Iowa-Kent State game that Iowa wore their Nile Kinnick era uniforms, Kent wore unis from the 70s, the refs had straw hats and baggy pants and the tab for all the retro fit stuff was picked up by the Hawkeyes. If Wisconsin is willing to pay for our retro unis that would be cool, but I don't think we should do it other wise.

I think they are cool.

I seem to remember Martin Bayless being interviwed during halftime two or three years ago. I still find it hard to believe, but he said the team actually helped install the end zone bleachers back in '82 or '83.

Bowling Green players don't get handed much of anything on a silver plater. DIY, all that. This is a lunch bucket team.

The old helmets were cool.

I like your old helmets. They look awesome. And the fact that it was a spray on falcon, made it a tradition(if I read some of the posts correctly.) Not many schools can boast that. (Notre Dame doesn't COUNT.)

A year later, Kent State threw a yellow lighting bolt on, Toledo threw a dark blue silouette of a rocket on, and Western Michigan threw a dark brown bucking Bronco on its

It was pretty much the same way around the country, with colleges taking a few years to figure out the potential for their helmets.

Some obvious exceptions:

-- Michigan's winged helmets were always pretty much the same way, dating back to a leather design from 1938.
-- Air Force has had lightning bolts since the 1950s.
-- Notre Dame had a green shamrock on gold from 1959-62, and Navy was using an anchor logo about the same time.

Wow, I honestly didn't know that those BG helmets changed the bland helmet designs!! That is Falcon-awesome!!!

the M is THAT old?! wow....

This logo and uniform design stuff is right in my wheelhouse.
