Spring Game Update!

I just left the game a few minutes ago. Orange team leads the White 38-35 with about three minutes to go in the first half. Orange team went three and out on their first two possesions. Turner led the White team right down the field twice, both drives ending in TD passes to Derrick Lett. Turner has looked REAL good.

The Orange team hasn't been stopped since. Jacobs to Partridge and Jacobs to Luke Alexander for some big plays. Partridge and Alexander look really good, too. Corey probably has five or six catches already.

Absolutely no defense on either side, as expected. Pope had a 60 yard run for a TD for the white team with a great stiff-arm on a db to allow him to finish for the TD. Sanders also took a reverse and went untouched for a 60 yard TD jaunt for the white team.

Needless to say, we will be scoring a TON of points this year. :D

Also, new announcer. I think it is the guys that does the Mud Hens.

BTW, I only left because my daughter is having a birthday party. :x

thanks for the update, WH!!! I've been dying to find out whats going on, the WBGU stream wasn't coming through online! (assuming BGRSO was doing the game, of course).

To bring up the "new Michigan on the schedule joke"... does Omar having a good spring game mean A) we're screwed in the upcoming season? or B ) he's gonna throw for EIGHT-thousand yards and 92 TD's this year?

Patridge and Alexander? (#15 Orange) both looked good at WR

Steve is definitely worked on his speed in the winter

No need to worry about the skill positions, it's our D that's the problem

I thought our D was supposed to be improved this year?

It's hard to judge the D since they're pretty much split into two teams. I will say that Sharon was held out of the game as much as possible. It looked like he REALLY wanted to get in, so maybe he tweaked a hammy or something?

Alexander had a couple of drops at the end of the game. And man did Sanders FLY on that reverse.

Oh yeah the orange team won 45-42 I think, not 100% sure on that one. White could have come back and won or at least tied it at the end but there was a bad snap and orange recovered it. Great game!

I think it is hard to judge the defense in a situation like this just because of how potent an offensive system we have. They will not face a team that runs the spread like we do, Boise and Toledo are similar though. But most of the other teams we face will run a more traditional offense so who knows how our defense will fare against those teams.

I noticed that Sharon was not on the field very often when we used a TE set. I think they were really trying to work that in more in this game. But we still had three WR on the field so I am curious as to why Sanders wouldn't still be on the field.

PJ and Dan Macon formed a pretty strong running combo for the white team as they both ran very well this afternoon. Turner made a lot of really good plays, which makes me even more optimistic for the post-Omar era of BG football. The long ball he threw to Sanders right before the half was perfectly thrown. I also liked that he handled some terrible snaps from center (except for the final snap that led to the fumble recovery). Was that Culp at center for white?

Omar was as good as expected and seemed to have good chemistry with the younger receivers, especially Partridge and Alexander. BJ Lane didn't do anything spectacular and may have trouble staying ahead of Macon on the depth chart come August IMO.

As far as special teams, I thought Fry wasn't bad and Timchenko looked good on XP's and his lone FG attempt. We certainly won't see as many touchbacks on kickoffs as we saw last year, though. Overall, I think the game showed us what most of us already know - we're going to have to score alot of points this fall to win the MAC championship.

Soltis made an extra point and had an ugly kickoff(but hey it was a touchback :D ).

The Spring Game..........

Yes , it looks like our offense is in fine hands for what I could see. Steve Sanders was like discharged bullet everytime I saw him steaking down the field!Wow! Partridge looks very ,very good! Magner'esqe if I may so. Luke Alexander showed some good speed as well. He definitly looks like a 4.4 40 guy. Yeah our defense. Mmm.....I dont' know what to think yet. The defense was split up so who knows, all I know is that we must , must get better and more physical on D this year. Monty Cooley didnt' play for some reason, must be a small injury that they didn't want risk him getting more dinged. Van Johnson showed some physicality at corner I believe and intercepted Omar near the end of the game setting White Teams last offensive attempt. Oh yeah, the O-line looks HUGE! Pope looked like he could go for 1200-1300 yards this year! Turner look good throwing the deep ball too! New TE Rubin Ruiz also looked very impressive catching the ball.

Now we'll have to wait until late summer scrimmage to see how our guys have bulked up and gotten bettter!

I was going to mention Ruiz in my earlier post, but I completely forgot. For as big as Ruiz is, that last TD catch from Turner was outstanding.

Yes.....

A very athletic catch for a TE. Must be what Coach Brandon was looking for in our TE's.
