Cole Magner
I've heard rumors that Cole's gonna go in the 3rd or 4th round this saturday. One friend said that he was only a good WR because he played behind Josh Harris. I feel he's good enough for a second round pick, am I the only one that feels this way..or is he really that good?

The only reason to dratt Magner that high is if you, as an NFL executive, think:
1. another team will draft Cole that high if you don't.
2. he is worth that high a pick.
I question the first part of the equation. I don't sense he is getting a lot of buzz.
Cole may make an NFL roster... but I don't see him going that high.

If Cole wakes up tomorrow, calls an impromptu workout, and follows it up with a 4.2 forty, he MIGHT go in the 2nd round.
I still wouldn't bet on it.
And that ain't gonna happen either.
Cole is a good WR, but he is barely draft worthy. I wouldn't complain if the Browns took a flyer on him in the 6th or 7th, because he does have some ability, but he doesn't stand out in anything enough to really vault up draft boards.
His stats are not enough to get him drafted. His senior year he was hurt and had a setback in the statistical department. That's a big red flag right there to any NFL scouts. They'll see his production went down this year, and not even bother to find out he was hurt. It sucks, but its true. That alone will drop him 3 rounds in the draft. On top of that you could argue that his stats were inflated by our offense. We pass the ball a LOT. We also don't run a lot of downfield routes. Most of his experience is crossing routes and short passes. So when you look at what he's shown he's basically shown himself to be capable of being a possession WR, we're unsure of his big play capability. That takes him down another 3 rounds, as possession guys are NOT valued at all on draft day; on top of that for a possession WR he is small, he's got good size in general, but possession guys should be 6'3+. You do see an extreme amount of quickness both on film, and from his workout numbers. People will think he might be able to get some YAC, so bump him up a round for anyone running the WCO. That puts his net +/- real quick at -5 rounds. Now since you're talking a guy, who based on his workouts, is at best a 3rd/4th round prospect, you're moving him down to the 8th/9th round. Unfortunately for Cole there are only 7 rounds in the NFL draft.
I love the kid. I think he's got a great work ethic, and could make a team as an UDFA. I love what he did for BGSU football while he was here. At the same time I realize that he's probably about the 30th best WR prospect in this draft. I love Cole, but he is not a top notch NFL quality athlete.
When I'm trying to rank BG players, who I obviously have a bias for, I wonder where I would be happy with the Browns taking them. If the Browns took Cole in the 2nd round I would call Phil Savage and tell him to ask if Butch Davis has a room for rent. It'd be an absurd draft move, and people would be calling for his head in 5 seconds. That is, of course, after 95% of the fans find out who the heck Cole Magner is, because none of them would know him. If the Browns were to use a 7th, maybe even a 6th, on him, I wouldn't cry. I still think he could be had as an UDFA, but if you really want him a 7th wouldn't be out of the question. He sort of fits into my mold of finding a high quality player who dropped due to a senior year injury.

As usual, your analysis is dead on.
There is a difference, I believe, in being an NFL-quality player and being draftworthy. IMO, Cole is an NFL-quality player. As you clearly explain, his stats do not support expending a draft pick on him. That injury really did set him back and may, in fact, have cost him being drafted.
I think Cole's football future will be one of two extremes. Either he'll hook up with just the right team and be a dynamite possession receiver for the next decade or he'll quickly fade into obscurity.
Cole could excel in an offense that uses a lot of multiple receiver sets, as you indicated. There are plenty of teams like that out there, but we'll have to see if he gets the attention of one that needs a gritty possession receiver.
I'll stick with my original prediction that Scott M. gets drafted and Cole goes UDFA with Keon & Hawk possible UDFAs.

good reply hammb
and to go even further, teams like their guys deep on the depth chart to be able to contribute to special teams. i just don't see cole having the speed to help on the edges or return or the bulk to help in the middle.
cole will have a decent career if he can latch on with a team that carries 6 WRs, however the trend is moving to keeping 5 WRs. it's all going to come down to who signs him as an UFA and how he is used.

Did you just make this up to post something because I don't think there are too many rumors that Magner will go in the third round.golfertk14 wrote:I've heard rumors that Cole's gonna go in the 3rd or 4th round this saturday. Re: Cole Magner
I heard it from some of my friends, and I believe one of the NFL analysts on ESPN (whose name convienently escapes me) was talking about the MAC and the potential draftees a few weeks ago.kdog27 wrote:Did you just make this up to post something because I don't think there are too many rumors that Magner will go in the third round.golfertk14 wrote:I've heard rumors that Cole's gonna go in the 3rd or 4th round this saturday. In a post about Omar Jacobs leaving early you stated that teams won't flag Jacobs for a drop in production his senior year but here you state its a red flag for Cole?hammb wrote:If Cole wakes up tomorrow, calls an impromptu workout, and follows it up with a 4.2 forty, he MIGHT go in the 2nd round.

How is Keon, a great playmaker with ST's stud written all over him a less viable option than a 4th WR at best on last years team? Hawk has less chance than Germain FitchFlipper wrote:Scott goes 5th round, Cole goes 6th-7th, Hawk is a UDFA and maybe Keon as well.
Cole may be worth stashing on a developmental roster. Teams usually like to put OL and QB's on those, but it's not unheard of to take WR who's got some raw skills and hope he gains a little strength and experience
Lets get serious here. cole will get a look but most likely will not get drafted.
I too expect Cole to make a team but he will play STS. He is gutty and athletic and willing to do anything. I would gamble he would be a teams PR too.
There are 8 spots on the practice squads now and teams general keep a wr their because so they dont keep one inactive.
