610 WTVN-AM Sports Director George Lehner is reporting OSU Coach Jim Tressel will announce the hiring of BGSU Defensive Coordinator Tim Beckman. There is no announcement of what position Beckman will have on the coaching staff.

Sheesh, this one comes late in the season!! Couldn't they wait for the team to load the bus for Wisconsin to make this move?
And who hires a defensive coordinator that just watched his spring game finish with enough yards to cross the state three and a half times?
hammb, et al... save me some champagne, please.

Wow, I was not really expecting anything else this late. Hope we can find someone decent at this point.

My Ohio State source says Tressell is going to fill the DC position from within (remember that their DC went to Marshall). So Beckman may have been picked to be a position coach.

OSU's Defensive coordinator Mark Snyder recently signed on to be the head coach at Marshall...maybe Beckman is his replacement?

I was not one of them. I agree that changes needed to be made, different schemes. But Coach Beck is gonna be missed!

Well, there you have it - be careful what you wish for. While I believe Beckman is replaceable, the timing sure does s**k out loud.

That was my first thought, too. Its not their fault its so late, since Snyder went to Marshall, which opened up the vacancy that is causing the Beckman hire, even if Beckman isn't filling it directly.
There were always two schools of thought on him here. One was that he was a good coach with an underperforming D, and the other that he was a underpeforming coach.
This would indicate that somene at OSU who knows something about football thinks he was a good coach.
That's too bad for us, but congrats to Coach Beckman. He's a nice guy who deserves to coach in the Big 10 if that's what he wants to do.

It must have been the steady improvement of Jelani Jordan over the past 2 seasons that got Coach Beckman this job.

JOB POSTING: TOP 25 D-IA PROGRAM IN NEED OF DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR
I have mixed reactions on this one.
On one hand, we were consistently in the top 1/3 of the conference in scoring defense, not an easy feat by any means. Coach Beckman is a quality person from a football background and had great recruiting success in the Cleveland area.
But still, it was impossible to ignore the disasterous meltdowns the defense went through at critical moments in the season...Northern, Bancroft High and the first half of the Memphis game. Tight ends running wide open down the middle of the field untouched, the secondary consistently shredded on deep balls, backup RB's having career days against our rush defense. Heck, even Northwestern moved the ball during the Motor City Bowl and was only salvaged by the ball-stripping, turnover-creating machine known as Keon Newson.
I think a fresh start with a new scheme will be a blessing in disguise. There should be a lot of quality coaches who will want this job.

Yeah, with those brickwall defenses at Kent, EMU, Buffalo....
The only thing that really concerns me alot with this is the timing. Getting a top notch DC this late in the process is going to be a very difficult task.

Here's the key question for all you wise guys. What makes you think anyone else would have done better?
