Why not move some of campus out by the stadium?

Post by Germainfitch1 »

Why not move some buildings out by the footballl stadium for classes and such. There is a ton of room and it would group together campus more. Right now many of my friends from other schools call it square campus university. I liked it when I went there but a person not used to having to go anywhere near the football stadium for anything probably wont think to go out there for a football or a basketball game. It will just seem to far. I think using some architecture like in the older buildings on campus University hall etc. would give the campus a more classic feel and make it more aesthetically pleasing. Now its effecient but not beautiful. Why not spread campu out that way.

I probably won't think to go out to the football stadium for a basketball game either.
Now, I would go there for a football game.

BGSU should have built the field house where the Sebo Center is going. That place is such a waste, if it had the indoor field , weight room, offices, etc. that would be a great draw for recruits. Then the Sebo money could be for a new or fixed up arena.

Oh and does anyone else thing the new "entrance" for the stadium should be on the scoreboard side of the stadium? The Sebo center to me seems like they are building a back door to the stadium. I guess it is so we can sneak out before anybody sees us....just like sneaking out of Mac when you would "stay the night" with a not-so-attractive young lady.

The field house is primarily an athletic facility to be used by all of the sports teams, why would it be a better draw for recruits by the stadium? They're still taken on tours of the facility on official visits and it's closer to the dorms where it's at.

As far as the entrance.....the Falcon Club parking lot is on the north side of the stadium. There's a lot of money that sits in that lot before every game. Where would you put the main entrance? Also of note, it has been rumored that a new exit may be added to I75 (not sure which road) that will make Mercer road the main entrance into the campus relieving some of the traffic congestion on Wooster. Again, if this ends up happening the logical route to the stadium from the north would be from Mercer to the road that runs past the ice arena to the NORTH side of the stadium.

The "entrance" is for recruits, mainly. I see what you're saying, but by coming up the road (Stadium Drive, I believe, past the baseball and softball fields, alongside the golf course) that provides easiest access to parking for the stadium offices, it works. And coming at it from the south, the open end lets you look into what's going on inside. I think it works. Besides, if the convocation center thing happens, there's much more room on the south end of the stadium than the north for that to fit.

Since we don't even have a men's track team anymore, the field house would be better if it was half indoor field half ice arena or b-ball arena kinda of like a bigger UFindlay facility.

I just feel the field house is a big waste. I know it is for "all sports" but so is the weight room and it is at the football stadium.

Just for the sake of argument....what about the women's track team? Also, at the time the field house was built we DID have a men's track & field team. Not to mention that our ice arena was actually one of the larger arenas, capacity wise, in the country. Why would they have needed to add another one on to the field house at that time?

Comparing it to Findlay's facility, btw, is a joke. Findlay's facility is more akin to our rec center (which is what it is) than the field house. The ice arena over there was a hack job at best, since that part of the building was supposed to be a swimming pool. In fact, once the HRC is expanded, the university is ripping out the ice and replacing it with a pool.

There's also the issue of public access to the facility. That facility is often times rented out for public use. I know that when my son was in cub scouts they had several overnighters in the field house. If you put that out at the stadium you really couldn't do that since it would, undoubtedly, be behind the perimeter fence.

You make it sound as if the field house stands empty most of the time. On the occasions that I've been in it that didn't seem to be the case. Is that the case now? (This is a serious question that I really don't know the answer to...)

I think the Field house was build where it was so that it would be close to the Rec center and could be used by the whole campus. When I was there most indoor intramurals were held at the fieldhouse (handball, soccer, basketball, track, volleyball) to name a few. The facility is also "rented" by many of the club sports teams in order to practice through out the year. The Club sports and intramural sport offices are housed there as well. The reason it wasn't put where the sebo is going is due to the fact that it was/is to be used by all of campus.

why shouldn't you put classes out by the stadium?

Think about it...can you get from the stadium to say....Math-Science in less than 10 minutes? Not possible....and imagine that walk in the middle of January....

So you only want to go to a school where you can get around anywhere in 10 minutes?

My entire point was that although it makes it easy to get places it is far from pretty.

If you only have ten minutes between classes that you need to take, then yes it is a necessity. Most of campus, in my mind, is attractive. All of the classroom buildings are in a nice group with dorms for the most part sorrounding the buildings. Campus lay out is really no different at UK than BG. Here at UK most of campus is about 10-20 minutes walk from the football stadium. (Rupp arena is downtown, no-one forgets to go there). Sure our campus can basically have a square drawn around it. Oh, well that was the plot of land we were given. I would prefer to see more money spend on adding buildings around the existing campus, than building new ones by the stadium.
On a side note, How can students forget there is a football stadium, its the first thing most people see when they drive in and out of town. And withe NW ohio being so flat is practically visible from most buildings.

If students think the football stadium is sooo far away, I am sure that they won't want to walk to Up/Downtown or Howards which is equally farther. Better stay home or go to the centrally located library.

Ok, I like your point, but something in there is mutually exclusive.
