BGs Chances of a National Title in the current system.
BGs Chances of a National Title in the current system.
Not to be a downer before the season starts but...
Even if our beloved Falcons go undefeated their chances of a Nationa Title game are very slim. IT would take quite a bit for it to happen.
The way the season would have to play out with BG going undefeated:
Wisconsin Wins all it's games except against BG.
Boise State does the same...but Georgia has to rebound from it's loss to Boise State to win the SEC title. And Oregon State challenges for the PAC-10 or wins the PAC 10 title.
Then the real kicker is for Temple to step up and at least challenge Miami (FL) and beat either Virginia or Clemson.
Then it would help if the MAC schools did well in their non conference games as well. Watch out for Ohio to make a turn around with their new coach. (Frank Solich can coach, too mad he coached for Nebraska, but he can coach. )
I think if BG wins out they have a better than solid chance of getting a BCS bid, but hopes for a National Title would mean all the chips would have to fall into the right places.
Let's just hope the Falcons play their hearts out and make this their best season ever!! Go Falcons!!

Glass ceiling? Do you mean to imply the Falcons wear skirts?
Why are we even thinking about national titles and our own Falcons? I know its summer, and its about time for the annual month-long, 800 post thread on national football tournaments, but really I'll be happy winning the MAC first, beating that school second, and a bowl third.

Agreed...that should be the goals beating Boise State, winning the MAC, Toledo, Miami and a Bowl...
Actually one game at a time. Should be the goal.
My point was in fact to point to the goals you mentioned. It is nice to have those loft goals, but also have goals that the team can control. What happens come bowl time is out of their hands, but each game of the season, winning the MAC and being Bowl eligible is something the Falcons CAN control. Everything else is in someone else's hands. All they can do is go out and win football games. And all we can do is root for them to play their best. That is all we can and should ask for.
i guess i should've put that post in different terms. i know we played good teams the past two years, i guess i just meant a team more nationally recognized. i know northwestern and memphis are both great programs, but to compete with a team such as ohio state or michigan would be nice. hey, wouldn't it be fun to take a shot at good ol' urban meyer at florida?

I would like another shot at Oklahoma. Maybe a shot at a Texas, Florida, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, or Ohio State would all be great.

I agree. The glass ceiling comment was for the BCS. Do you think a MAC team has a shot at the title game even if they run the table? It wouldn't happen....the BCS powers that be won't let it happen....not yet.NWLB wrote: Why are we even thinking about national titles and our own Falcons? I agree with everyone on here - we need to win the MAC. I will be happy with that. One game at a time, yada yada yada.Falconfreak90 wrote:I agree. The glass ceiling comment was for the BCS. However, let's go ahead and dream of a NC scenario. We are undefeated...
We would have to win everything, have our OOC opponents turn out to be better than anticipated, and be either the only undefeated team or one of two. Imagine if Miami went undefeated under Roethlisberger's last year. They certainly are in the BCS...and since no team went unbeaten...who knows?
If we have a year in college football similar to two years ago and we are the only unbeaten team, it would be tremendous. Imagine if we get shut out of the title game and pull a Utah, beating the crap out of our opponent. WE just might win the AP poll. Split national championship.
Odds -1,000,000 to 1.
It's fun to think about.

If by "Nationa Title" game, you mean the final game of the season which the BCS claims is a national championship... then I would say it is almost universially understood here at AZZ.com that our chances are very slim.BGALUMNI wrote:Even if our beloved Falcons go undefeated their chances of a Nationa Title game are very slim. But I do believe that if we win all our games, we will have a pretty good shot at a BCS bowl.
Also, after this season, an undefeated season ought to make any MAC team a near-lock for a BCS bowl, if the new system works the way it is supposed to.
Truly. I think we should just win all the games, and worry about the rest later. I mean there is huge up-side to not getting in the game if we should find ourselves left. Without playing in the game, we can wax on about how were screwed or better for all time, without proving anything!

Agreed, it is definitely something I would not mind complaining about for years to come. It is a good problem to have.NWLB wrote:Truly. Anyhow...my point I guess in all of this was that the fans and the team itself should focus on what it can control and what it can accomplish and not worry about what COULD happen if X,Y, and Z happen. It the team goes out and gives 100% good things will happen and that is a fact.
