This is what I love about Coach Brandon....he tells it like it is. He doesn't mince words and try to hide anything.

Yelling at Coach Stud! I doubt we'll see Omar get much rushing chances this week but wait til NIU! Once Omar gets his rushing cranked up, the only way our offense will be stopped is by our own errors and mistakes. This Sat, I would give the ball to Pope, Lane, Stover and Macon all night, mix in a few passes and maybe try an end around just to give Novak and the Huskies something else to ponder.

Can't wait to get to the Doyt.

I still find it rather sad that our coach has to make a plea like this to get people to come to the game.

It is quite sad. But here is how I look at it, in fact, I think I made this argument on the ESPN boards to some OSU puke some time ago:

Our stadium holds what? liek 30,000ish people. Our school has 20,200 students, and the city has 29,636 residents, for a total of 49,836. That means that we need 60% of all people regardless of age/gender/interest in the sport ro team/etc/etc/etc, to come to the stadium to sell out. 60% is a lot if you consider that a lot of these people are ages under 4 and have no idea what football is, some are older, handicappable, or ill and are unable to attend even if they wanted to, there are the less dedicated fans that won't come if the opposing team is bad(b/c obviously we come to Falcon games to watch the other team? ) and then there are the people that don't go to games ever b/c they don't want to and have no interest....for some reason.... as if you can find something else to do in Bowling Green. (no way you can make it through an entire season and find somehting to do EVERY saturday, I've always lived in BG, and as much as I love it, we need more stuff in town)

My argument continues toward osu: Columbus has over 800,000 people, as well as what? 50,000 students? Yes, you can sellout a 100,000 capacity stadium every game.... and you have no reason not to. If 15% of the population attends the game, its a sellout, not to mention all the suburbs population. In comparission, osu would need to fill a stadium more than 5 times as big as the shoe to be as popular (by %) as BGSU. granted we don't draw 30,000 fans per game, but hey, 20,000 isnt too bad for us considering past statistics.

Anyways, my point is. Yes having to beg is a bad thing. No GB shouldn't have to do it. It does hurt to see, but what other coaches care enough about their players ans the community to do that? I can bet you if osu started to lack attendance (which will never happen.... dumb people will be forever breeding...) you will not see jim tressel begging the community for support. Or talkign about how great a place columbus is to live, and so on. (note: just using him as an example, take no offense suckeye fans) But really our "poor" attendance, primarily at games v. lesser opponents(in the eyes of the average joe spectator) isn't that bad when you break it down. Anyone know what our avg. attendance was last couple seasons? I can bet we are gaining a lot of interest inthe community, and if Im not mistaken, ive been seeing more and more students show up at the Doyt on saturdays in the fall.

But liek GB says, hwo great would it be to pack that place for SEMO. That would be just outstanding!

Actually, Bowling Green's population, 29,636, includes BGSU students.

that cant be can it? you telling me that we have less than 10,000 people that live in BG? I dunno if I buy that.....

I'll take your word for it that BGSU's FTE is around 20,000, not including Firelands College.

Whatever the enrollment figure is, it includes quite a few people who commute to BGSU classes from outside the city of Bowling Green.

I'd guess the city population is slightly less than half students.

the 29,636 is fromt eh last census, and on the sign entering BG, i got 20,200 from the BGSU website a moment ago. I really did think that number included students, even though people always told me it did, i didnt want to believe them.

The City of BG has only 9,000 or so residents? Seems it should be a larger population. If that's the case, no wonder we struggle to get butts in the seats.

Look at Penn State....they had 98,000 for Akron and that was 10,000 short of a sellout. It happens.

It's not that its less than 10,000 total, I don't believe.

I think Schaden is saying that there is an overlap. For instance 5000 of those BGSU students are likely Bowling Green Residents as well, so they're being counted twice.

Either way the point is valid, but goes beyond just that as well. A vast number of the people that go to OSU games are not students or from Columbus or even the surrounding area. I go to games there. I know others that go to games there, many of whom are a 2-3 hour drive away from C-bus. What we need to do at BG is establish a fanbase that is excited enough about BG football that a large number of them are willing to travel that distance to go to the games. When you think about that is the key to a sports teams fanbase. I know that I travel to Detroit, Cleveland, and Columbus for sports teams. Most sports fans are willing to travel. We just need to convince them that BG is worth that 2 hour drive. I know that Freak feels it is

These numbers surprised me a little. I was always told that the BGSU population was half of the town and the locals made up the other half. The 29,636 is accurate census data from 2000 on the total BGSU population. It's not clear whether this includes students or not. The census data states that 46.6% of this total pop. is made up of 18 to 24 yr olds. This would be consistent with about half of the city's population being students.

However, this year's BGSU population is up to 20,975 which would mean the university makes up about 2/3 of the city population is the 29000 figure doesn't change much.

It includes students.

The point of the census was to find out where everyone lives on April 1, 2000. On April 1, 2000, anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 BGSU students lived in Bowling Green, Ohio.

That's not a population figure. It's an enrollment figure (and, likely a FTE figure, which complicates things, but I won't go into it).

Quite a few BGSU students commute from outside the city. Many come down I-75 from the Toledo area. Others come in from the small towns that surround Bowling Green. It's a hefty number; we're talking several thousand people.

All those commuters need to be subtracted from whatever the enrollment figure was in 2000 to get at how many of the 29,000-plus city residents were students.
