Another post about Oklahoma

Well,
This is the first chance I have had to jump on the board since the trip to Norman. I realize everyone may be getting tired of the Oklahoma posts, but I want to share a bit about my experience.
The game was great. Yes, we made some errors and could have improved in a couple areas, but overall our team made us proud. They held on, they never gave up, and they sure made BGSU look good. I don't think I have ever been as proud of our guys as I was against the Sooners. Even when they were down, they stayed tough and kept fighting.
This game was perhaps the best experience I have ever had at any game we have played. The very worst thing I heard from a Sooner fan was "How ya doin?" I have never been in a stadium, including ours, that was as welcoming and friendly to visiting fans. The Sooners have every right to be proud of their team, but I don't think the team realizes how proud they should be of their fans. I learned a valuable lesson this weekend-big school programs do not have to be intimdating off the field. A good team holds its own without a bunch of smack.
Before the game we were treated to a tour of the campus. Mary Ann, a Sooner through and through invited us to meet her at 9:00 to take a look around the campus. She took us through the library, through several beautiful gardens surrounding wonderful sculpture, and through the rec hall. We were able to see parts of the campus that we would never have thought to look for. OU is a beautifullly kept campus. She explained some of the Sooner history and some of the projects in process. Every Sooner fan we met throughout Friday, Saturday, and Sunday was nothing but pleasant, helpful, and interested in BGSU.
Maybe we didn't win, but you won't get better without playing tough opponents! Our guys can hold their heads up high. They made us all proud!

LH, I am pleased to hear you had a good time in Norman, and I am not surprised to learn that Mary Ann was a good hostess.
Good luck to Bowling Green and, especially, to your son throughout the remainder of the year.
Please stay in touch with your Sooner friends.

Great report, Hartmom!
I WILL travel to Norman if BG ever plays there again!!
The OU folks sound like the best in college ball.
From now on, I will do the same for visiting teams' fans! Except UT's!
C ya Sat!

I didn't realize it until now that I actually passed by you and your family (I'm guessing it was you because your name is hartmom, and these people were wearing 62 jerseys and I think that is Hart's number) walking from the game....one of the people behind me shouted "Welcome to Norman"....I thought about it, but I was more focused on getting to the Student Union to get some food and a nice cold Coca-Cola Classic....but thanks for coming to Norman....I hope everyone who came enjoyed their time here....we sure were glad to host....

I know it's time to move on to the next game but I just had to say how impressed I was with your team, especially Omar Jacobs. While most of the other BCS conference teams were playing in easy win games, we played a team that gave us a very good test and with a few breaks could have pulled the upset. Knowledgeable Sooner fans were a little worried about playing such a high caliber team on opening day and the Falcons gave us reason to stay to the final seconds. Great game Bowling Green!
I now have a team in the MAC that I will be pulling for every week which is saying something since you share the color of our two most hated enemies. Good luck the rest of the season!
BTW-What does Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba mean?

We're glad we've gained a lot of fans in the Norman, OK area, and like I said to several OU fans, you gained a lot of BG fans on Saturday as well. You're the best fans I've ever conversed with.
On Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba:
Gilbert Fox, '48, left BGSU more than 50 years ago. When he did he left a legacy to campus spirit that exists to this day.
It was Fox who brought Bowling Green State University its unique, albeit unofficial, fight song and he was also an original member of SIC SIC, the secret organization that promotes school spirit.
Fox says it was a fluke that brought him to BGSU. The native of Westchester County, New York, was leaving the service in October of 1944 after serving as a bombardier with the Air Force in Italy. Wanting to get on with his life and enroll in college, Fox was told by his discharge officer that BGSU was the only university in the country that had not started its fall term. He quickly enrolled as a music education major and was soon immersed in campus life.
In 1946 he was asked to perform at a special spirit assembly called by University President Frank Prout. Fox brought along a song he had learned in Italy from a group of South African Airmen. The tune, which was a loose translation of a Zulu war chant, was "Ay Ziggy Zoomba". "Those airmen were great singers of all kinds of songs and they taught me ?Ziggy Zoomba,? Fox said. He rewrote the words and taught them to a quartet of students who sang it at a school assembly. The students loved it.
The song quickly caught on and over the years it slowly worked its way into a permanent place in BGSU spirit. The song is now heard very often at BGSU athletic events and alumni gatherings ? it was even sung in the 1968 movie Paper Lion in which former All-American and Detroit Lion All-Pro defensive back Mike Weger, '67, sang it as part of his rookie initiation at training camp.

Hartmom,
I'm glad to hear you had such a pleasent experience down in Norman. I thought we looked pretty good for the first game of the season. Maybe Ed and I will see you Saturday before the game.
