Jacobs' Heisman Campaign

Is the athletic department doing much to promote Omar Jacobs as a Heisman Candidate? Oregon put up a very large billboard in Time Square for Joey Harrington. A lot of teams have done things. Are they doing anything that anyone knows of? Should they be if they're not?

If the Falcons win their first three games, I'd look for one hell of a Heisman campaign thereafter.

If the Falcons drop one of those games, there wouldn't be a whole lot of point.

That also appears to be the feeling of J.D. Campbell based on this recent article about Heisman promotional strategy:

I have a feeling they won't so much to promote him regardless of what is going. After the third week of the season it is too late IMO.

I disagree. At that point, BGSU should religiously start firing off Omar Heisman updates to every college football writer or sportscaster in the country. Maybe mailing a trinket with the first batch would help. A Web site could help -- but it isn't make or break.

I know it doesn't sound inventive, but, ultimately, Omar's performance has to close the deal.

And just because we don't see a visible campaign doesn't mean it isn't happening.

Omar has gotten some good pub this off season. I doubt it's a coincidence. J.D. had a hand in that -- and I'll bet it was more than just waiting by his phone and hoping reporters would call.

Hey everybody,
I'm starting a class on flash this session and I was bored today so I threw together a little flash website for omar's possible heisman campaign. It's not done and it's not the best looking (i'm still learning), but by the time that class gets done I might be able to throw something better together.

Any ideas for possible pages (better than what I came up with)?

Any sites (other than BGSU) I could get more info about omar?

Thanks for the help. If the university isn't going to start one maybe we can take it upon ourselves to help get the word out :)

Looks good, but you might want to change all that BLACK to BROWN!! 8)

Can you get some initial loading page... something with multiple pictures, sound, and some game calls from the radio booth?

I think the page should start with OMARVALOUS rolling across the screen...

As for the music... something new and edgy...

I'd love to see the MAC finally get their due when it comes to a Heisman candidate!

Oh.. dont forget quotes from other coaches! and records broken!

It might be more clever if it wasn't new and edgy.

For one thing, Heisman voters aren't new and edgy.

But, more importantly, think about Pulp Fiction.

The movie is enormously cool -- but there wasn't anything new or edgy about the soundtrack. Dick Dale and the Del Tones? Neil Diamond? Kool and the Gang?

The magic of that soundtrack is that the director took a bunch of stuff that was sliding off into oblivion and whipped it together into this magical musical whole.

What is the perfect theme song for an Omar Heisman campaign? I'm not sure. We could devote a whole thread to this.

I would simply suggest that it needs to match the big picture.

The big picture, as I see it, is this: One of the best quarterbacks on the planet is a dreadlocked fella slinging the rock in the middle of a cornfield in Northwest Ohio.

The music would need to riff off that -- evoking a sense of place and irony while, ideally, including a phrase that could be used in the campaign.

Looks to be a pretty good start.

Couple of things- I agree BROWN rather than Black.

Also, use the New logos/font rather than the old falcon head and font. . .

Keep up the good work!!!

Should we see if Randy Newman is in need of any work?

I always like his stuff...."burn on big river, burn on. . . "

I was noodling through my hard drive, and I think I've got a great Heisman theme song.

White Stripes. "My Doorbell."

The first words of the song, and the refrain:

"I'm thinking about my doorbell. When you gonna ring it? When you gonna ring it?"

That's hot.

(And new -- off the new album. But not edgy. Just piano, drums, and Jack White singing...).

I wish I could upload it, but it's 3.68 megs. I don't have that space right now (although I'm going to work on that this weekend.)

good stuff schad -- I have that CD and I could definitely hear that song over an ESPN montage of Omar ripping up about 9 teams at halftime of the Toledo game.

After we're undefeated and Omar's hung 300 yds and 5 TD's on Toledo at the half, the announcers can speak of nothing but Omar's unprecedented run towards the heisman.

I'm feeling a bit punchy this morning, but this scenario, if not probable, is at least a possibility to shoot for.

BTW, how exactly do you noodle through a hard drive....that sounds dangerous. =)

Oh, then you just have to love the Family Guy episode where the world has been destroyed and Peter and the family are on a quest to find the last remaining food supply, the Twinkie factory. Along the way the run into Randy Newman and get a chance to listen to the lyricist. Click here to listen to the clip.
