Saw this on the Miami board... http://www.frye2004.com/ Is this guy really a heisman candidate or is Akron reaching on this one? I've never heard of the kid.

He's quality. I think Joshua Cribbs is more exciting, but Frye is a potential first rounder. Scouts and pundits have really grown high on him this past summer.

Are you being serious? You've never heard of Charlie Frye?

Don't mess with my mind, man, emotion isn't an easy thing to transfer over the internet!

When you live around Columbus, the media only believes there is one team in the nation and that's ::puke:: osu. You don't hear much else. Taking classes at BG for the summer was the best thing I could've done. I can't stand osu.

Charlie Frye is the best player in the MAC, IMO. He is a stud, and a good pro prospect. He's got grit & toughness and has continued to excel even though UA cannot put anything around him.

That said he's not a legit Heisman candidate unless they win a LOT. A MAC player will only get Heisman pub w/ a 1 loss or less season, and they better knock off at least one VERY good team. It's the nature of the conference, and I don't see UA being good enough to do that.

akron's trying its damnedest to make frye a candiate. i saw some stories in the repository earlier this week about some of the events their doing to promote the team (and undoubtedly to get some more money to build a downtown football stadium), and a focal point of their campaign this year is frye for heisman. the athletic department is actually leading the charge, inclding giving out yard signs and bumper stickers.

Frye is a great QB and as a MAC fans we should wish the best for him so that we can continue to send great signal callers to the NFL. It can only help us in the future!

As obnoxious as it may be hearing Cleveland radio ads proclaiming Charlie Frye as a Heisman candidate, Akron is right on the ball. Looking back, BG athletics sure missed the boat last year with Josh Harris. We were outdone by Miami's wherehaveyouben.com and now Akron's site (both officially sponsored).

On the other hand, harris4heisman.com is still one heck of a site.

Maybe we oughta start brainstorming a good domain for O4..

Frye gets tons of press here in Akron from the Beacon Journal. He owns 49 Akron records already and is the real deal. Akron plays Miami and Marshall at the Rubber Bowl on nights that BG doesn't play. I'm gonna head over to see those games.

He is a big, strong kid with great leadership skills. IF Akron gets their defense in order, don't be surprised to see the Zips hosting the Falcons at the Rubber Bowl for the MACC...which would be fine with me! But that's a big IF....

Jaco, nice Viking avatar there!

GO BG!~

East Sleeper

The only way he will get any attention is if he can get Akron to the Mac title game. I haven't paid attention to the east previews but is Akron really a sleeper team in the East? Bg-Akron would be an interesting title tilt.

We need more of this type of thing!

More MAC schools need to do this, and do it well. I agree that BG could have and should have done more to push J5 as a Heisman candidate. Would it have mattered? Not in the voting, but that's necessarily the main goal for a MAC program, though it's nice.

The real payoff is in having high school kids look at the promotional material and see themselves there in a few years.

So I say hats off to Akron. Frye is a very good player and the publicity he generates will only help the Zips and the MAC in general.

I've joined this chorus on this board - well, actually the old version of this board :P - but BG and other MAC schools have to get serious about marketing.

Any hype that puts the MAC out in areas that don't typically get MAC attention is great. Schools and the league need to promote more.

I'm thinking I might have to join you at one or both of those games. Akron could come out of no where (and to be honest, Kent could as well with Cribbs back) and they will probably end up being much more exciting games that people are thinking.

Plus I think keeping Akron viable in the MAC as far as attendance goes to very important. We don't want to fall off the radar entirely in NEO if there is an attendance witch hunt.

I hear ya....its MAC football and the best teams in the East come to the Rubber Bowl. Akron gets Miami and Marshall at home...that is huge. You can head down to our nest and then over to the Rubber Bowl if ya want. Seems the Zips are always a player or 2 away from ever really contending...they did tie for the East title in 2000 and lost to Marshall, 31-28, at the RB. Otherwise, Akron plays UT for the title.
And ya have to see the RB turf...I think its NexTurf? It looks sweet and actually makes the RB look *gasp* better. Akron really needs a new stadium. The RB is just falling apart.

GO FALCONS!!!!

problem for frye this year is he has absolutely nothing around him. if they do anything, it will be all him.
