Senior Josh Haldi's quarterback career with Northern Illinois is in jeopardy because of a right-foot stress fracture suffered in summer drills. He aggravated it running a bootleg on the third play of Saturday's 23-20 loss at Maryland and didn't return.

''I'd say, right now, it's 100-to-1 that he won't play Saturday against Southern Illinois, and who knows after that,'' coach Joe Novak said. ''We can't red-shirt him because he's already been red-shirted as a freshman. I feel so sorry for him because he's such a good player and leader.''

Sophomore Phil Horvath, who threw for 219 yards and a touchdown against Maryland, is expected to start Saturday.

Remember the sigh of relief across the MAC a few years ago when, um, crap, I can't remember his name now ("Bennett", maybe?)... but some kid named "Turner" was going to take his place in the backfield?

That experience coupled with this Horvath kid almost knocking off Maryland on the road is enough to make me "wait and see" on this one.

I couldn't agree more. And, to be fair, I feel badly for Haldi. It's his senior year, his team got rooked by the bowl system last year and he could miss his last chance at a postseason game. As much as BG needs to beat NIU - and as much as I want BG to win - I'd never wish an injury on anyone.

P.S. --- I'm almost ready to hatch!

Isn't this a classic argument for a medical redshirt?

From what I understand, Haldi played one down against Maryland.

Why wouldn't he be able to get another season?

True, if he wanted one, I don't think I'd see any problem in him getting one. I guess it depends on what the other circumstances are. How serious is the injury? (It may just say 'stress fracture', but could it be something lingering that he's going to have around for awhile?) What is his personal situation with family, school, career?

If he wants one and they give him a hassle, he should call Wasean Tait for advice.

Speaking of redshirts

Utah has a player in his SEVENTH year! I didn't catch it all but I think there was a redshirt, a year off due to a transfer and then a medical redshirt last year. Seven years is ridiculous. :P I wonder how many degrees that guy has, after all he is in his seventh year of college!

Actually, is he the guy that got two years off to do a Mormon mission? I remember hearing that story over the weekend. And if so, maybe he NEEDS all those degrees to buy nice things for his wives some day.

Did Urban get this kid as a transfer from BYU? If so, then he probably had his two year missions trip in there too.

The player being referred to is Marty Johnson, Utah's starting running back. Marty received a two-year medical hardship extension and was suspended for one year for an unspecified reason. Urban kept the reason for the suspension under tight wraps and did not release an official reason for the suspension other than "breaking team rules." So officially, Marty is a 7th year senior for the Utes.
