Future opponents

Story in the Sentinel last night about future schedules. Contrary to earlier reports, we will NOT be playing Pittsburgh next season. We have Boise at home, Wisconsin in Cleveland, and at Florida Intl. The FIU game is part of a home and home series where we will host them in 2007.

Holding off on scheduling the fourth non-conference game for next year to see if the MAC can work a deal with the Big 10. Of course that would mean a road game for us as no Big Ten team is coming to the Doyt (Krebs' words, not mine. )

The rest is stuff I think we knew. At Ariz St, at Missouri, at Pitt, at OSU. The Missouri and Pitt games are to complete a 2 for 1 deal where the each team has hosted the other once already. Also, the Wyoming series is still on, just no dates yet. Trying to find times that fit both teams schedules.

I hadn't heard about FIU. Didn't we get piped by a Florida school in 2003? Maybe USF? Hope we don't get hosed again.

Still, Boise and Wisky at home, FIU on the road, possibly ANOTHER Big Tenleven team on the road ... that's a pretty high-end OOC schedule. Glad to hear the Wyoming deal is still alive. Don't know why, but I like the idea of playing the Cowboys!

Florida International isn't exciting, but I'm glad to have a home-and-home and glad to see we are gettting the road game out of the way in 2006.

If Central Michigan can host Indiana and Toledo can host Purdue and Miami can host Iowa and Ohio can host Northwestern, I'm not sure why it would be impossible for us to get a Big Ten team at the Doyt.

Perhaps Krebs' real point is that it wouldn't make financial sense to host a Big Ten team at the Doyt? (as opposed to Cleveland Browns Stadium?)

Thanks for the updates Warthog. Interesting. Yeah, it was USF that pulled out on us....those bastards! Sorry, but that was crappy the way they hosted us one year, then pulled out on the return trip the next season. I'm not overly excited about hearing about Florida International next year. But, they are D-I and if they actually do follow up and return their game with us, that gives us another home date in the future. It could also be a nice recruiting feature to our schedule. What would be even better is, if this is a "Homecoming" game for Omar Jacobs....meaning....he'll be back at BG next season and we'll be playing somewhat near his hometown!!!

Here's a link to a picture of FIU's stadium. From the picture, it reminds me of a smaller version of Buffalo's stadium. It seats 17,000.

It appears that all of the endzone seating is temporary seating that is removed during track season, because the stands sit directly on top of the track in that picture. Is that correct?

The points about other MAC schools hosting Big Ten teams was noted by Krebs. But we won't see one in BG for two reasons. First, only the lower level Big Ten teams are going to MAC sites. The lower level Big Ten teams are too afraid of BG to play us at all, much less at our own place. Second, the upper level teams don't find it necessary to play a MAC school, especially on the road, for money reasons.

One more thing I forgot to mention. I'll have to quote this one directly from the paper tonight when I re-read the story, but I caught a slight inclination that Krebs was sort of holding his breath about actually "hosting" Wisconsin in Cleveland next year. He said something like "if that games goes off as expected..." or something like that. I may be interpretting incorrectly, but my first thought was that it is possible that Wisconsin might back out.

Knowing Krebs, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a HUGE, no make that B!G buyout for that game. I've got a feeling after that USF fiasco he's making sure all of those contracts have $$$ ramifications if someone backs out.

And as for Indiana and N'western, yes, they are "lower level" Big Tenleven teams. My response: So what? I mean, the FIU game is OK, but wouldn't we rather have a 1-for-1 with Indiana or Northwestern (Florida recruiting ramifications aside)?

He could also mean that "if this idea makes as much money as we think it will" or "if this gets 45,000 fans in the seats to watch BG football...". There's a positive side to it too. I'll be interested to see the exact text of the article.

Wisky possibly backing out? That would suck royally, if it happened. That would be a HUGE, I mean B!G , game for BG in Cleveland. With a ton of BG grads in NE Ohio against a Big 10 team???

I don't know if I buy the whole "Big 10 teams are afraid to play at BG". As others have noted, Miami, Toledo, Ohio and other MAC teams have hosted Big 10 teams. Heck, a few years ago, Akron hosted Virginia Tech and almost beat them at the Rubber Bowl! The Zips lost 21-18.
There must be a way to get a Big 10 team into the Doyt. Heck, UT has had Purdue and Minnesota at the GB the last 5-10 years. I think Ohio had Minny in there a few years ago as well as Iowa State. I can't believe we can't get these teams here.

I am also happy the Wyoming series is still on at this point. They are an improving team from the MWC and a quality opponent. There is no such thing as an easy win these days. Remember, that's what teams were saying about BG just a few short years ago.
