Expectations for Jacobs

I know a lot of us are really excited for this season and the publicity Omar has received. What I am a little worried about is that some of our expectations are going to be set way too high. To expect a ratio around 41/4 again is asking for a lot. It could happen but it is unlikely. I believe that Omar will be greatly improved this season. I think his completion % will go up, yards per pass will go up, a greatly improved deep ball, possibly even more than 41 tds, and a better runner. I remember last year we came to expect nothing but TDs out of him. After the Marshall game there were people on here giving him a hard time for his tipped interception at the end of the first half. I mean give me a break. What I am getting at is I can forsee Jacobs having like 2int after the first three games and people on this board saying what is wrong with Omar? There is not much room for improvement on his TD/int numbers. Where I think you will see the improvement is in his confidence, leadership, and poise. I hope he has only 4 ints again this year but don't bank on it.

I only have one expectation and hope: Omar contributes to a team which wins the MACC and a bowl game.

Everything else is gravy, baby.

Omar's improvement needs to come in the win department, coming from a GB Packer fan Brett Favre can be an idiot, and throw the sillyiest interceptions you've ever seen in your life, but 95% of the time when the game is on the line he comes up big and wins the game for the team.

I couldn't agree more. The funny thing about him having only 4 int's last year was that the one against Temple should have been a completion. It bounced off of a receivers hands and was tipped and picked. In this regard, Omar was lucky to have only 1 "bad luck" int. Most QB's have 3-5 int's a year that are caused by things out of their control. Most of the time this means a receiver breaks off a route he shouldn't have or tips a ball into a defenders hands. I watched 11 games Ben Roeth....... played in Pittsburgh last year and saw 5 picks that were caused by receivers through absolutely no fault of his own.

My point is, we can't ask for this kind of luck again. Omar could play flawlessly every snap of every game and always make the perfect decision w/ pinpoint accuracy and still have 4 picks simply due to the law of averages. If Omar can put up 45 td's and 10 int's with 4,000 yards and about a 70% completion rate I like our chances.

I see no reason why Omar cannot repeat his numbers from last year. This guy is an amazing athlete and player. He is a hard worker who does not get intimidated by the competition. He still have great Wrs with Sharon and sanders and also we have young Wrs waiting to step up. Another reason why i see him succeeding is because of his leadership skills. I see this guy leading us to the title with no problem, the only thing that can stop him is himself. If he doubts his abilities then he will have problems, but if he shows confidence with what he can do then its all gravy. i cant wait for the football season to begin and i excited to see another BGSU winning season. Go falcons

It's tough to pick a ball off when you can't stay within 5 yards of the WR and the QB your playing against has a release just a hair slower than Marino.

I'm not saying he is not going to put up huge numbers, because I think he is going improve on some of his stats. However, to expect four or even less than four interceptions again is a tall order, especially when you throw 450 passes a year. Like J4H said you can be picked off that many times by shear bad luck. All I am trying to say is I hope people do not think that throwing just 4 ints in 12 games is something that is easy to repeat, because I can see the threads now if he ever throws 2 interceptions in one game.

This is the biggest place where I want to see improvement in Omar. 41:4 TD:INT is going to be VERY difficult to duplicate, and I don't expect him to. I think we'll see a higher completion %, as someone else stated, which is a good sign of improvement especially reading the defense. What I really want to see, however, is an improvement late in games that are close. It's not really Omar's fault because last year the circumstance never really arose, but we still have not seen him pull a Josh Harris leadership type role. Not once did he put the team on his back in the 4th quarter and will us to victory. I expect that from my superstars, but unfortunately last season we were basically out of the NIU game, OU had the ball the entire fourth quarter in that game, and our defense couldn't stop UT in that game. All our other games were laughers by the 4th quarter.

It's almost guaranteed that at some point this season we're going to need our leader to rise up and will his team to victory. I see no reason to believe Omar is not capable of this, just saying we haven't yet seen it.

kdog: Amen brother, amen.

I've said the same thing before - you cannot assume that just because he has a year of experience that his numbers will get better. Quite frankly, there's not much room for improvement. Numbers-wise, i agree that the completion pct. could tick up, slightly, and we could see more yards per pass. However, let's not discount that Omar lost his favorite target (Magner) and two other experienced wideouts (McGrady, Hawkins). Let's also not discount that he'll be working behind a much different offensive line.

Now, before this thread turns into "our line will be great and so will our receivers," let me say that I believe Omar will have plenty of talent to work with. But expecting him to throw for 50 TDs and 2 INTs just isn't realistic.

Hammb, you've hit on perhaps the most important point. Omar was never really in a position in '04 where he had to take the team on his shoulders and "will" them to a win, which is something we came to expect from Josh. I agree that we should expect to see that opportunity this year, perhaps more than one time.

As hammb and 87 eluded to, the leadership will be the key this year. Brandon even mentioned it at the MAC media days. About talking to Omar that great QBs lead their teams to championships and that is what he needs to do this year. I have confidence that Jacobs can be that guy to lead us to the MAC title. :supz:

There are a number of reasons for Omar's success last year. Much of it was displayed in the spring game this year. The credit for such a great TD / Int ratio can be spread around alittle.

1. Omar is very accurate. Corey tells me he basically throws the ball so that the receiver is the only one that can catch it, otherwise it will be incomplete. He also throws a very catchable ball.

2. Omar makes good decisions with his throws. He runs if nothing is there, but our WRs are almost always open.

3. On my last point, we have a outstanding WR coach (Zach Azzanni). Our receivers are very disciplined and run very exact routes. They know how to get open and make great plays on the ball.

4. Last years offensive line gave Omar alot of time to throw. They protected him very well and did not allow him to be pressured or rushed very often.

With a formula like that you will put up very good numbers. Omar put up great numbers which is a tribute to his abilities.

This formula is still pretty much in place. We did lose some good talented receivers, but it appears that we have some young ones that are ready. I will grant you that they may cause a few of those tipped ball interceptions due to their lack of game experience, but as demonstrated in the spring game they run very good routes and they get open. And if the offensive line can gel with the new replacements then Omar will put up very similar numbers.

What was the Quote: 'Get open and I will find you'

I can't wait to prey on the badgers...

I agree. The MAC title is the prize. Jacobs is more than capable of leading this team to the title. His stats will be in the same neighborhood, IMO.

Anyone know how Jacob's back is. I heard he missed a football camp out west because he pinched a nerve in his back and wanted to rest his back. This will not be a nagging injury all year will it?????
