Harris at Browns Training camp

Just got back from the training camp. Got a chance to see Josh up close and personal. I was pretty impressed with how he was throwing the ball and his footwork. He actually impressed me more than Dilfer. Dilfer was somewhat sloppy with the footwork, but threw great passes. Johnson didnt impress me too much. Lang Campbell wasn't horrible but nothing special. And Frye was decent... probably most comparable to Harris. I think Harris and Frye have a great shot at earning a starting role late in the season.

Great pic, UK! We were swimming at Dana's mom's house yesterday and she gets the Lorain Morning Journal. On the FRONT page of the paper was a great pic of Josh playing with his new son, Jacob. I kept the paper trying to see if they have a website to post the pic.

If anyone in the Lorain/Elyria area can post that pic, please do. It is priceless! Josh is gonna make on heck of a father.

Some quotes from another guy who has been at training camp, and posting on the Browns forum. This guy is a former coach at Akron, and I have met and had conversations with him for a number of years. I respect his opinions more than anyone else on the Browns board, and as much as anyone on here. He's a legit observer, IMO.

From Sunday's practices:
- Doug Johnson couldn't hit the ocean if he threw a ball off his boat in the middle of the Atlantic.

- Andre Davis has a BEAUTIFUL leaping catch along the sideline. He got up there and pulled it down overtop a corner. Really it was just a terrible pass by Johson, but Davis made it look good.

- Josh Harris clearly has the edge for the no.2 coming out the opening weekend. Showcased his athleticism a bit today on a roll out in which he juked a DB and gained 5 more yards.

- QB's in general today did alot of playaction rollouts. Seemed to be the new implementation of the offense for the day.

- Charlie has quickly progressed. Day 1 he was staring down receivers. But he has quickly gone to checking down and is especially excelling at the short 3 step drop game. One, two, three, BOOM; and it's out of his hands to an open receiver. Haven't personally seen one ball flutter or be short of the target yet.
From Saturday's camp:
- Josh Harris is currently second string QB. He's getting alot of reps and a good hard look. Good thing because I don't think Doug Johnson has completed a pass yet this summer.

From the sounds of it Harris is taking most of the reps with the 2nd team and is currently the #2. I still believe he'll be given every opportunity to beat out Doug Johnson for the spot. From the sounds of it Doug Johnson isn't playing too well either. For all of us Harris fans this sounds like pretty good news to us.

This is just about what I was expecting out of Josh during training camps. All he needs is a shot, in my opinion, and knowing him and his work ethic, he can do the rest.

This makes me very, very happy.

This is certainly good news. Sounds like Johnson is playing his way out and Harris is playing his way in. :supz:

Some notes from today's morning practice:

This from a reputable source. He provides writeups of Browns camps every year, and is a training camp vet. He is not a coach or anything, just a fan who studies the game quite a bit:
QBs: I didn’t see much of the quarterbacks today. One thing I noticed so far is they have a strange rotation. Josh Harris is working with the #2 offense right now. Yes, I didn’t studder. Josh Harris is currently on the second unit. I think the reason why is because they want to give him EVERY opportunity possible to make the team. They want to get a very good look at him. Doug Johnson is the veteran, and has been around the block a few times. As far as Charlie Frye goes, I think its safe to say they are pacing him. He has been playing with the third, fourth, and even fifth units…..and is not getting nearly the reps Dilfer and Harris has been getting. The quarterback race (if you want to call it that) has been even so far between all the guys. All quarterbacks have displayed they have no problems throwing deep, and they all have pretty solid spirals. Of all them, I would have to say Harris is the one who has been displaying his athletic ability the most. He loves to roll out of the pocket. Dilfer is surprisingly agile for a guy his age/size. He doesn’t look uncoordinated when he rolls out, which was shocking to me. In addition, Dilfer is easily the loudest quarterback. He has a commanding voice that should make defenses jump offsides (or the offense jump depending how you look at it). Frye has probably the softest voice of the group.
This from another source, that I cannot vouch for either way, but thought I'd share it anyways, especially since its more of what we want to hear :)
Doug Johnson looks AWFUL so far, just Awful.

Harris looks pretty good, clearly ahead of Johnson, or Frye at this point.
And finally another writeup on the QBs. God I love football. It's just so great to start hearing all these reports coming in from camp!!!!
-Dilfer can definitely throw a good deep ball. Harris looks like a natural at throwing on the run. Johnson can put some zip on the ball, but seems to do so unnecessarily at times. Frye consistantly throws too low when throwing on the run. After practice he and Paul Irons stayed on the field and Charlie practiced throwing on the run some more. For the most part they were still low, but he made some progress. Frye and Irons were the only guys to come over to the fans and sign autographs (other than the guys over at the tents who sign for the kids only).
From the sounds of it Harris really starting to show off his athleticism, and is having a pretty good camp. I still believe that the coaching staff is hoping he honestly beats out Johnson. Johnson was brought in as some veteran competition, but this team really wants an excuse to keep the young, talented guys with upside. If Harris continues to outperform Johnson he'll win the job, IMO.

I hope you're right and, from the sounds of things, you are. So far it appears they signed Johnson as a fall back position in case Harris doesn't measure up. So far, it seems the #2 job is Josh's to lose.

Thanks for the updates, hammb! How exciting for Josh....sounds like he's doing everything he can to make the team.
