2008 game: UT vs. OSU
Anyone read in the blade today where Toledo is backing out of a game with Ohio State in 2008. Coach Amstutz said he does not want to play OSU in Columbus but would play them in Toledo. I can't believe that. Typical Toledo. I guess they would rather play Florida International instead. Also their AD O'Brien does not want to play OSU either. They are a bunch of pansies.

Umm, I think you misread some of that. My take was that Ohio State is trying to fill in the 12th game slot and contacted Toledo about a game. Tressel mentions that he would like the 12th game to be against a MAC team from Ohio to support the Ohio schools. No contract was signed or agreement to play was made. To me, it sounded as if OSU jumped the gun and printed in their Big Ten media notes their future schedules with Toledo listed in 2008. Toledo did not back out of a contracted game with Ohio State.
I will give Amstutz credit though for throwing the jab out there about being willing to play Ohio State in Toledo. That was funny.

But I would never turn down playing TOSU. Never know Toledo may never get asked to play them again. Amstutz just wants to play OSU at home that way he can have his hotdogs an brats waiting for him in the locker room at halftime. He would not get that at OSU

Warthog is right here. Toledo has not backed out of a game with OSU. OSU has had information on websites for a month or so now saying they will host Toledo in 2008. The Toledo athletic department says that nothing has been signed and they don't know if it ever will be. Some inside information from another UT poster said that the payout OSU offered was less than we get for a 2 for 1 deal with Purdue, and Purdue comes to the Glass Bowl in that deal and we will get revenue from that game on top of the amount we get out of payouts. I believe I even heard we have a better chance of making more money in revenue in our home opener against Western Illinois than we would in the payout that OSU is offering when you consider the travel expenses the team will occur in going to Columbus.
This of course doesn't mean that a deal won't be made between Toledo and Ohio State, but I would guess that OSU has to offer a higher payout.
yep... good ole classy toledo. just lookin for some money. how about you guys suck it up and go out there and play for the love of the game? and not to mention the recognition you could get from playing osu. i duno about everyone else, but when i went to the bg game at the shoe, it was one of the best experiences i've had as a bg football fan. go shoot yourself in the ass with your rockets

Re: UT vs OSU
Typical tOSU...they come up here for fundraisers and take a bunch of money for unwitting fans for their so-called events and then they don't want to return any of it back. I completely disagree with your comments regarding Toledo missing an opportunity here. I think OSU is trying to use their power and influence to bully Toledo into playing them. Like "who wouldn't want to come to Columbus and place us" or "you should be paying us for the priviledge to come here and play". Well they can stick it. If we had our schedule plans laid out and then OSU came in and wanted us to drop a game to come play them, I would hope we would have the fortitude to stop and think first (as Toledo is doing) instead of bowing down to OSU and all their requests.mk455 wrote:yep... good ole classy toledo. just lookin for some money. how about you guys suck it up and go out there and play for the love of the game? and not to mention the recognition you could get from playing osu. i duno about everyone else, but when i went to the bg game at the shoe, it was one of the best experiences i've had as a bg football fan. go shoot yourself in the ass with your rockets

When we can host teams like Purdue, Fresno State, Boise State, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse......and get some nice revenue and publicity from it........why should we waste our time with OSU if they are not going to give us decent money? And like I said a deal could be made still.
We played at Penn State back in 2000 in a one game only deal and got much more than OSU is willing to payout. We got plenty of recognition when we hosted and beat Pittsburgh in 2003.
In college athletics today financial decisions are very important. If you have a chance to make more money you are going to do it. Especially when nearly every non-bcs school is losing money on athletics.
On a side note, about a year ago Toledo approached Michigan State and offered a 2 for 1 with 2 games at MSU and 1 game at Ford Field to be considered the UT home game. MSU said no. So then Toledo countered with a 3rd game at MSU for 1 game at Ford Field. Again MSU said no. Maybe now that the Big Ten is supposed to be in this scheduling agreement with the MAC, MSU will change their mind.
you cant compare those teams to osu. and what i was trying to say... is that the recognition you would get from beating a big 10 team on their own turf would be much greater. wouldn't you rather play in front of 100,000 fans and millions on espn? or play in front of 30,000 fans and be on like channel 6?

I understand what you are saying, but if Toledo can already get schools like Pittsburgh, Purdue, and Syracuse to come to the Glass Bowl and beat them and get that same national recognition for it, why should we take a crappy payout to play at OSU? I would like to remind you that Toledo has averaged about 33K in attendance for home games with Pittsburgh, Purdue, and Syracuse in the last few years and we are 2-1 in those games, beating a ranked Pittsburgh and a Purdue team that finished 3rd in the Big Ten and won their bowl game with a 9-3 record at season's end.mk455 wrote:despite IF osu is trying to do what you're saying, i still think that the national recognition would be good for any program, especailly if UT beat them in their own house. that alone would be worth sucking up to their requests.
