Senior linebacker is one of 65 candidates

Orlando, Fla. - Bowling Green State University senior linebacker Teddy Piepkow is one of 65 candidates for the Butkus Award which is presented annually to the nation's top collegeiate linebacker by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando.

The Clark Lake, Michigan native was second on the team with 81 tackles last season and also had two interceptions. He is a graduate of Lumen Christi High School.

The Butkus Award® and the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Inc. are celebrating their 21st anniversary in 2005.

The Butkus Award® Watch List will be trimmed to 10 semi-finalists on Thursday, October 20. That semi-finalist list will be cut down to three finalists which will be announced via a national teleconference with players, coaches, media members and Butkus Award® officials on Thursday, November 10. The winner will be announced Saturday, December 10, 2005 at the Butkus Award® Gala in Orlando, FL. The Butkus Award® will be presented to the winner by the award's namesake former University of Illinois and Chicago Bear NFL Hall of Fame member, Dick Butkus. The finalists, their coaches and families are invited to attend the Butkus Award® Gala festivities including a welcome reception, golf tournament and silent auction.

This year's Watch List includes 65 noteworthy candidates that represent schools and conferences from across the nation. The independent selection committee for the 2005 Butkus Award®, comprised of 29 of the nation's foremost national media members, is solely responsible for all voting in the selection process. Selection Committee members have already started evaluating the candidates and will continue their review throughout the entire football season. Additional Watch List candidates may be added in the coming weeks. Voting for the three Butkus Award® finalists and the Butkus Award® winner will be conducted by confidential ballots of the selection committee.

The Butkus Award ® is regarded as one of the most elite individual honors in college football. Past recipients include such outstanding linebackers as: Derrick Johnson (2004-Texas), Teddy Lehman (2003-Oklahoma); E.J. Henderson (2002-Maryland); Rocky Calmus (2001-Oklahoma); Dan Morgan (2000-Miami (FL); LaVar Arrington (1999-Penn State); Chris Claiborne (1998-Southern California); Andy Katzenmoyer (1997-Ohio State); Matt Russell (1996 Colorado); Kevin Hardy (1995-Illinois); Dana Howard (1994-Illinois); Trev Alberts (1993-Nebraska); Marvin Jones (1992-Florida State); Erick Anderson (1991-Michigan); Alfred Williams (1990-Colorado); Percy Snow (1989-Michigan State); Derrick Thomas (1988-Alabama); Paul McGowan (1997-Florida State); and Brian Bosworth (1985 and 1986-Oklahoma). Created in 1985 by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando Inc., the Butkus Award® carries the name and support of one of the greatest middle linebackers in football history, Dick Butkus.

As much as I love Teddy Piepkow, AJ Hawk has to be the best LB in the nation. Kid is a beast.

But it's great seeing Teddy's name on the list. Kick some azz, T5.

It is very cool seeing Teddy's name on the list. That alone is an outstanding accomplishment. We need a huge year from Teddy.

But as per Hawk being the best LB, you couldn't have seen Ahmad Brooks from Virginia play last season. Ahmad is a stud and true ILB. I would put Chad Greenway of Iowa ahead of Hawk. Heck, I even like Bobby Carpenter on Hawk's own team more than AJ. Don't get me wrong, AJ is one of the best in the game, just not the best IMO. I would sneak Terna Nande to the top of the list as wel.

Those are all great LB's...But I'll still take Hawk. If he's one of the best in the game, then he could be THEE best.

I'll take Hawk along with Freak. Brooks is a beast, and might be a slightly better athlete than AJ, but AJ is the most instinctive LB I've seen in college in awhile. He knows where the offense is going before they go there. And he flat out does NOT miss a tackle.

Brooks is a great ILB as well. His experience in the 3-4 will definitely make him shoot up draft boards for all these 3-4 teams.

There are a TON of great LBs this year and getting Piepkow onto the list is an accomplishment with all the talent out there. I still think its Brooks & Hawk on one level, and the rest of the guys are at least a notch below.

FWIW, Bobby Carpenter may be a freak athletically with good size & speed combine numbers, but he's not even close to AJ's level on the field. He's a good player, but AJ is special.

I would think OSU has one of the best, if not the best, LB corps in the country. Hawk just seems to be everywhere and with Carpenter and Schlagel (sp?), wow...

i like Rufus Alexander, Spencer Toone, and Terna Nande, but AJ did have a big game against BG... but still Purdue knocked him around pretty easily..
