Update From BGSU Today

I ran up to BG today to pick up some necessities for the Wisconsin game next week. While I was there, I walked around campus, strolled by the facilities, dropped by football practice, took in a day back at BGSU.

1. The stadium does look funny without any end zones seats. But like it was stated earlier, I guess the ground breaking will be in September. From the looks of it, there’s not much work to be done before it starts. Someone posted pictures a week or two ago and it looks the same as then. But I was ready to pull out a shovel and get started myself on the SEBO Center while I was there!

2. It looked like all of those panels at the football stadium (the one that fell) were removed for the most part. They were stacked around the stadium in piles. Another thing I wish we had out there at the stadium was a storage area – the – the place looks so cluttered with mowers, tires, equipment, etc., just sitting around.

3. The playing field itself looked a little “rough.” I know our home-opener isn’t for five more weeks, but the grass looked a little like a mowed field than it did a football turf. But I’m sure they’ll jump on getting it looking sharp here in a few weeks though.

4. I was watching some football practice from atop of the east side stands today. I didn’t watch too long (wasn’t sure if I should be up there) and it looked like typical drills being carried out. But the one thing that really stood out, unfortunately, was the place kicking I saw today. I watched for a few minutes and the kicks I saw were all misses. And the kicker I was watching was wearing #87…..so that wasn’t a good sign. The kicks were hooked left, pulled right, short, etc. Now to be fair, I was only there a few minutes and the kicks were being taken from about 40 yards out or so, but there were all misses that I saw. Maybe he hit 10 consecutive before I got there….who knows….but I didn’t feel comfortable watching what I saw. But it was practice and he’s 0-for-0 in 2005 when it counts. I just hope the kicks go through the uprights when they count (holding my breath). I also saw some guys sitting off to the side watching practice. I couldn’t tell who they were because their backs were turned to me, but I assumed they were some of the injured guys.

5. A bunch of the teams were practicing today which was great to just see…..made me feel like a student again. The football team was at it, the men’s and women’s soccer teams were practicing, the tennis team was practicing, and I even saw the men’s basketball players walking into the football stadium to lift. I saw some of the new guys, but wasn’t sure who was who. Some of the baseball players were even out throwing at Stellar Field. I like the new stands at the baseball stadium (I know they were put in a few years ago, I just never saw them in person until today). They look better than the old ones, but it sure would have been nice for those guys to have a little stadium built like Ohio and Miami built.

6. I walked into Anderson Arena. The new floor designs look good, I like the designs better than what was there before. I just wish we had paint in the paint, I’m not a fan of the bare lane. But every time I walk into Anderson Arena, it pains me to see 1968 as our last men’s trip to the NCAA Tournament. That’s still mind boggling to me.

7. I picked up some cool things at the Bookstore and SBX. There were some news things at both places and the business was great in both places with classes recently underway.

8. One thing I loved seeing today was all the orange on campus! It was a nice day, so there were a lot of t-shirts being worn, etc. But there were a lot of students, guys and girls, wearing their BG gear and it was great to see.

9. I really like the way the downtown renovations turned out. Again, I know that was several years ago, but the new sidewalks, trees, crosswalks, etc. looked really nice.

10. I liked the somewhat recent additions to the Rec Center. The windows in the pool area and around the track above the basketball courts really adds some light to the area. I also liked the climbing wall, I didn’t know we had one.

11. I’ve been in the new union several times before, but every time I go there now, it makes me wish it was like that when I was there. It’s a lot better than what most of us had.

11. Lastly, the one thing I’ve been saying ever since I stepped foot on campus - and now it’s gotten even worse – our campus needs more trees!!! I think our campus is nice, it’s not the nicest one I’ve been on in my opinion, but the first time I was there I thought it could use more trees. Now there are even fewer tress standing after the ones that were cut down because of the road widening that occurred last summer, others that feel because of storms or the tornado we had a couple years ago, some had to be removed for new buildings or because they were old, etc. We just have so many widen open places and bare plots of grass that could really use some trees to spruce the spots up. And so many of the trees we do have standing have had some many limbs cut off them, they haven’t got much more than twigs for limbs. Would whoever is in charge of the landscaping architecture up there….PLEASE PLANT SOME MORE TREES!!!

That’s all for now, hope to see some of you in Madison!
