Atlanta, Georgia - The national player of the week nominations are in and the polls are officially open. Falcons fans can cast their vote for Bowling Green State University junior quarterback Omar Jacobs for the Cingular Wireless/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Week, the only major college football honor determined exclusively by fans. Jacobs was nominated for the award after passing for 458 yards and five touchdowns in the Falcons' 56-42 loss to Wisconsin on Saturday.

Jacobs is one of four candidates for the All-America Player of the Week, who are selected by a panel of ABC Sports and ESPN college football analysts. The other finalists are: Wisconsin running back Brian Calhoun, who rushed for 258 yards and five touchdowns in the Badgers' victory over Bowling Green; Clemson kicker Jad Dean, who kicked a school-record six field goals, including the game winner, in the Tigers' 25-24 win over Texas A&M; and Georgia quarterback D.J. Shockley, who accounted for 374 yards and six touchdowns in the Bulldogs' 48-13 win over Boise State.

Who will be this week's winner now rests solely in the hands of college football fans nationwide. Fans have until Wednesday, September 7 at 11:59 p.m. EST to submit their votes via wireless text messaging.* The winner will be announced September 8 in the first half of the ESPN Thursday Night College Football Game between Oklahoma State and Florida Atlantic. In all honesty, as good as Omar was, I have to go with the Calhoun kid from Wisconsin. We expected Omar to put up big numbers but we were never expecting the numbers put up by Calhoun. 258 yards is quite an accomplishment, even against our disappointing defense.

According to that, voting's not over. Also, it appears the site they use is down too. Not too good of an operation it would appear.

They announced during the first half of the Miami(FL) - FSU game that calhoun was the winner. Maybe the techincal difficulties made them close the voting early? Or perhaps I misheard.
