How, exactly, does red shirting work?

What I mean is....can a player play at all during a season and still be RS'ed? Barring injury RS, of course.

Or can the player not play at all? Mrs Freak was asking last night and I guess I've never been 100% sure.

Thanks and GO FALCONS!

As far as I know, without deciphering rule books, you have a certain number of snaps you can play and still be redshirted. I think the number of games participated in has to be three or fewer to still be eligible to redshirt. I'm not positive of the number of plays/games though.

There is also a hardship clause for an injury.

Thanks J4H and O & B,

I thought it was so many plays or quarters or something, just never knew for sure.

For basketball you can play so many games and still get Redshirted for medical reasons. In football I was always under the impression that when you play one snap your redshirt is gone...barring medical reasons.

I'm not 100% clear, but the way they always make it sound if you play a down you've used a year of eligibility.

Most of the redshirting described thus far is medical/hardship redshirting. I think Freak was going for the non-competition redshirt. This redshirt is used to describe a student-athlete who does not participate in competition in a sport for an entire academic year. If you do not compete in a sport the entire academic year, you have not used a season of competition. For example, if you are a qualifier, and you attend a four-year college your freshman year, and you practice but do not compete against outside competition, you would still have the next four years to play four seasons of competition.

Each student is allowed no more than four seasons of competition per sport. NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition.

But then you have exceptions like Jason "Van Wilder" White who got a 6th year of elgibility even though he played in a few games during those injury seasons.

Though to go with what UK is saying, I think there are cases where you can petition the NCAA to get a year back, if you've played a minimal amount of games.

Say in that play where PJ got hurt this weekend that him and BJ *both* had to miss time, and they needed to put Macon in, but by the next quarter or whatever (a substantial amount of time, but not a full game), one or both were able to go back in, then Macon didn't play the rest of the year, I think they could make a case for getting him a year of eligibility back. Then again, I'd like to think if that was the case, it would be an "immediate approval" type deal, so we wouldn't sit him all year then find out he's not getting the year back.

Of course, I could be off on that and my point be moot anyway.

Right, medical/hardship redshirts are different than non-competition redshirts.

I don't think we could make that argument since Macon wasn't the one who was injured. It would suck if that were the case; wasting a year on a guy for a couple of plays.

Yeah, I'm not sure either, and might be confusing it with something else, but if there WAS a scenario to get a year back that didn't involve an injury, that would be it. Not something like putting Josh Harris in for a meaningless game late in the season just to do it.

If you play one snap your year is activated and your "redshirt" is gone.

If a player misses most of the year with an injury the school can apply to get the year back. But if there were no injuries to the player, no matter how little he played, if he played at all he can't get the year back.

Of course that did still work out kind of OK for us. You know 41 td's and 4 int's and all...

Yeah it did.

I just brought it up because I know we can laugh about it now... kinda like Flipper and his lumberjacking skills.
