In his first quote, is Lovett blaming players, or am I reading this wrong? Or was he misquoted?

IMO, that's probably not the way to endear yourself to your guys...Agree? Disagree?

He's telling it the way it is. The defense as a unit did play poorly. I believe he's saying that the players aren't 'bad' but they under-acheived in the game.

I'm glad he's disappointed. I would rather him being p!ssed, but I'll take disappointed.
I certainly don't want an attitude of "Oh well, they're a big televen team....."

Somehow I'm thinking that defense is going to play like their hair was on fire.

"He was looking forward to the contest against Ball State because it represents an even bigger challenge than Wisconsin."

If this guy thinks BS is a bigger defensive challenge that Wisky, I'm a bit concerned!!!!!

He is putting some of the blame on the players. Some of it should be on the players but it's odd for a coach to say that. Maybe it's bad that he did, maybe it's good and he's trying to light a fire. It is refreshing to hear a coach say something that isn't coach-speak.

FWIW, he does say later in the article that the poor tackling and some other things were on him.

Easy now, Lovett did not say that. That's the writers sentiments you quoted. Lovett said, "The game this week is more important than Wisconsin, this is a MAC game. Our goal is to win the MAC. This is the beginning of the real season. The preseason is over.” I agree with him competely on this point.

pretty old trick, just trying to get his players to show a little fire. Maybe if we say how bad Lovett is he'll actually make some halftime adjustments .

The defense didn't play well. That's just a fact.

I don't think he was hanging them out there. He didn't name names.

To improve on the lackluster showing against Wisconsin, Lovett said he planned to “go back to the drawing board” by emphasizing things such as tackling, getting off blocks and overall execution.

“We didn’t finish plays well,” he said. “That was a very good back we had a hard time tackling. Their offensive line was very good, but again we didn’t execute some fundamentals and techniques as I hoped we would. I put that on myself.”
Sounds to me like he's equally distributing the blame. Lovett is, indeed, telling like it is. We didn't get off blocks ... at all, against Wisconsin. And when we had players in position to stop a play, they didn't tackle.

And he's right. The Ball State game is more important. First, it's the next game; no need to keep looking in the rearview mirror instead of the windshield. Second, it's a MAC game.

Well, the way the defense played didn't endear them to their coordinator.

You're reading too much into this. It used to be that you could say something like this and it would be seen as motivation to players. Then along came the damn PC movement and now we have to listen to a bunch of crap about how we're playing with their emotions and how it wil lharm their growth.

BULL! The defense didn't play well. Tell it to'em straight and tell'em what we need to do better for the next game. Then PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

Yeah, it's all Kofi Annan and the ACLU's fault.

He is saying he knows are defense is better than that.
They did not play to the level he knows they can play at.
He is disapointed in the performance, and is expecting us to see vast improvement this week against MAC oponent #1.

The real questions of marked improvemetn will come against Bosie State...a game that matters not int he MAC ....TG....and if we make a good showing, then we realy have something...if not...we will experice troubles against Miami, Toledo, and other Mac teams.

"I put that on myself"....It doesn't get much clearer than that.

I really like the way he's reacting and responding. This proves that that the coaching staff is not getting complacent and simply chalking it up to inherent disadvantages (i.e. "upper echelon Big 10"), but are instead examining the fundamental technique flaws that have been noted on the board, namely tacking and the failure to disengage from blocks.

They should get their confidence back against a depleted Ball State team and work from there. This season really comes down to the final 2 games against Miami and Toledo, and I have to believe significant progress will be made by then.

Urban Meyer says stuff like that all the time and people throw roses in front of his feet. I like his determination. Do you think the players don't know they did poorly?
