Jacobs waiting for his spotlight

OK, let's concede that Vince Young of Texas has forged to the top of the list of challengers to Matt Leinart's Heisman Trophy throne. Let's also say Bowling Green's Omar Jacobs is whispering in Young's ear.

The BG quarterback gets his national TV moment on ESPN Sept. 21 at Boise State. In just two games, suggestions his 41-touchdown, 4,000-yard performance last season were a fluke have been put to rest.

After throwing for five touchdowns against Wisconsin and another five against Ball State, the BG junior is on pace for a 65 TD season, pending a MAC title game and a bowl appearance. He is averaging 443 passing yards per game.

Should Leinart or Young stumble over the course of the season, Jacobs will be on the Heisman watch as well.

Good find, AZZZ. It's easy to take these 500 yd games for granted, and then you realize half of the rest of the MAC is at it as well. Did somebody say something about PS2 and insanity? Poor D may be a good bedfellow for those looking for a facile argument, but when Garrett Wolfe scoops almost 250 yds between 2 Big 10 games, including Michigan, you have to think Omar isn't the only one doing something right in this conference.

We do take these big offensive numbers for granted. Look at Iowa against Iowa State last week. They were held to 3 points. Look at Temple against Wisconsin last week. Temple never crossed the 50 yard line. What we are doing offensively is unbelievable and should not be taken lightly. I have news for anyone out there. We would put up about 30 on anyone in this country. If we could just get a couple of stops defensively here or there we would be in great shape!

I agree that we're spoiled and take our offense for granted a lot, but we can't win the MAC championship on offense alone. Because no matter how many times we put 42 points on the board, it doesn't mean anything if we give up just as many.

I would bet you any amount of money that we don't put up 30 on a defense such as OSU, LSU, FSU, etc.

Our offense is really good, but we have shown in the past that we do not continue to put up the big numbers against the top notch defenses in college football. That's not a knock, because nobody else puts up that many points on them either, I'm just saying.

For all the love of our offense I'd enjoy our team a heckuva lot more if we were known for keeping all our opponents under 10 points a game, but we struggled to score 20...

Hammb, I agree with your comments, for the most part. But I would add that a reason we wouldn't score that many points is because we tend to play it pretty close to the vest against those teams. Out last trip into Columbus we didn't let loose until the fourth quarter. We tend to run the ball too much also. In my opinion.

I watched a bit of the Iowa State game, their offense reminded me a lot of ours but of course their D was more stout. Speaking of stout, I'm thirsty.

Hammb.....we put 42 on Wisconsin and could have had more if Sharon catches one late in the game. Wisconsin will suprise everyone this year and probably won't give up more than 24 points in a game the rest of the season. You're crazy if you think we couldn't hang 30 on any top 15 team. Last year Georgia only beat Marshall 10-0 in a game in great weather down at Georgia and we hung over 50 on them in brutal weather. Just stating facts.

I only watched it on TV, but I don't remember the Marshall weather being anything close to "brutal". Might have qualified as "cold", or even "damn cold", but hardly "brutal".

Balls Tate last year was as close to brutal as it got last year, I think.

Wisconsin has a young defense this year, and are nowhere near the top of college football in that regard.

We have played one of the top defenses in the country each of the last 2 seasons. We put up 17 offensive points against OU last year, and 17 against OSU 2 years ago. Unless you're going to argue that this offense is 13 points better than the past 2 seasons, I don't see where you really have a case...these are facts as well.

Our offense is very good. Not good enough to hang 40+ points on any team in the nation. Nobody's is. Great defense almost always beats great offense. It's a pointless argument anyway, seeing as how our defense would give up 50+ to any of the aforementioned teams.

It wasn't any of those things. The weather for the Marshall game, for being in late October early November, was great. Sunny all day, temp was probably in the mid 40s but with the sun on you it was really nice.

The only thing that sucked was having to sit at the Dodge dealership all morning trying to figure out if my car would make it back to lexington the next day instead of tailgating.

It is pointless because our defense is not very good right now but the Oklahoma game was Omar's first game w/only 60% of the offense put in place and yes, this year's team is 13 points better than when Josh was running the show in my opinion.

Just one man’s opinion:

1. Reggie Bush, RB, USC: Off last week. Should have big numbers against Arkansas.

2. Matt Leinart, QB, USC: Ditto.

3. Vince Young, QB, Texas: Count the Ohio State defense among the believers. Threw for 270 yards and ran for 76 more. A 24-yard touchdown pass with 2:37 remaining beat the Buckeyes.

4. Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma: Never got on track in the opener against TCU, but was a one-man band in Oklahoma’s 31-15 win over Tulsa. Peterson ran for 180 of his 220 yards in the second half, when Oklahoma did not throw a pass.

5. Omar Jacobs, QB, Bowling Green: After throwing for 458 yards in the opener with Wisconsin, Jacobs followed it up with 428 yards and five touchdowns in a 40-31 win over Bowling Green.
