BG vs. OSU - Not a done deal

Post by Redwingtom »

Per Gregg Brandon on 1470 today, he did not confirm that a deal was in place for a game with OSU next year.

But he also didn't speculate that it wouldn't happen either. Saying it is "not a done deal" makes it sound like there is some hangups with the deal that need to be worked out. Brandon simply said that he didn't know if the deal was in place yet.

Was it me, or did Coach not seem entirely happy about playing OSU next year? Wamer made a joke about his schedule, and Coach said "don't remind me." He laughed, but then he went on a little speech about how BG isn't in the Big 10, and he is concerned about playing too many games like that in a season because the team gets too beat up, and it hurts our ability to win championships. He specifically mentioned playing only one Big 10 team a year, and OSU makes two next year.

I don't blame him.

In a perfect world, I'd hope for the road side of a two-for-one that brings a cool team to Doyt Perry down the road.

I like playing Ohio State. I'd like to see us on their schedule as much as any other team in the state.

But it's going to be a whale of a challenge... maybe more than we need next year when you look at our other games.

The schedule is killer next season, forget about osu and try to get a home and home or a 2 for 1 with Indiana, Northwestern, Illinois, Missouri, a BCS team that will not physically kill our team and lead to injuries and a beat up team. There are ACC & SEC teams we should look into as well....Vanderbilt, UNC, Kentucky, etc. 1 Big time school a year is enough.
All of these teams have played at MAC stadiums, so there should be no excuse in trying to get one of them.

I agree with O4H, I would like to see us get a 1 for 1 or even a 2 for 1 with a "smaller" BCS school. I think Vanderbilt would be a great team to try to get. Its not that far, they are beatable, but I also believe that they are trying to become a better team. I don't expect them to be the bottom SEC team this year. The other teams mentioned would all be good in my opinion. It would also help to diversify the conferences that we play each year, and help get BGs name out into those markets.

I'm not looking forward to playing OSU, simply because of cost reasons. The Wisconsin game will likely be a $30 ticket, plus the $60 to see the OSU game, and that's more than all our other home games combined.

On top of that with or without Omar next season we lose a LOT of talent. I didn't get to see or listen to the BSU game, but sounds like the freshman RB looked good. I hope so, because we lose Pope, Lane, Sanders, and Sharon next season. That's a LOT to replace on offense...especially when it seems your coaching strategy is to let the opponent score 30-40 points a game and see if we can outdo them.

I don't like our matchup against OSU next season at all, and I don't look forward to paying $60 for the privilege of watching it. Of course I'll still be there, yelling my ass off...

I can see how Brandon wouldn't be excited about the schedule next year. Honestly, unless he and Studwara have the PS2 controller in their hands and can throw up any BS Hail Mary play to beat a team projected to win what 2 games this year, then they have more than their hands full. Playing Boise, Wisconsin and tOSU requires simply too much thought, game preparation and in-game adjustments for this staff to handle.
