Sharon, Pope and Jacobs

I remember a discussion a few weeks back about whether or not Pope was the best RB to ever play for BG.

Well what about Sharon being the best WR? He has the most TDS and will have the most yards after next week.

Could we have the best QB, RB and WR ever to play at BG on the roster right now?

Hmmm....that is an interesting point. Statistically, Sharon could be the best ever.

Best hands ever? My vote goes to one of three players....

Mark Schzlachic, Kurt Gerling or Cole Magner. We've had a lot of great WR's over the years.

Add Greg Meehan and Stan Hunter to the discussion, as well as Robert Redd. Meehan caught everything in the zip code; Hunter seemed to be open on every play. When the '85 Falcons lined up with three wide (Meehan, Hunter, Boxley), you knew the defense was in trouble, because even if they could somehow cover those three, you still had to deal with Gerald Bayless in the flat and Bernard White coming out of the backfield.

Great post, '87. Those guys were great.

It comes back to the other thread "The Real Deal". How are we going to define "superstar" or for this thread's purpose the "best ever." Does it only matter what career they had while at BGSU or does it matter that they had a career and success on the professional level after BGSU. If it only matters what they did while at BGSU, then my personal lists as of this very moment for QB goes
1)McClure
2)Jacobs
3)Harris
4)Erik White
5)Dackin.

RB would be
1)Preston
2)Pope
3)Miles
4)Durig
5)Bernard White

and WR would be
1)Robert Redd
2)Sharon
3)Szlachic
4)Magner
5)Ronnie Redd

If NFL draft position or career longevity on the professional level counts in the equation, then I think you have to argue that the best three to ever play their respective positions are currently at BGSU, which is the reason I included Bayless on my previous list of great BGSU athletes because of his 13 years in the NFL. Anyways, pick away at my lists.

5)Insert favorite BGSU QB here!

In fact, you can easily put insert favorite RB and WR for the number five spot for both lists.

Everyone is forgetting some of the unsung heroes.......the offensive line.
Doug Smith and Bob Reynolds both had very long and effective NFL careers, as well as great BG careers.

I have to say that Gerling had the best hands I've ever seen in a BG uniform. That guy caught EVERYTHING. Cole had very good hands, but I do remember him dropping a few occasionally, I don't remember Kurt ever dropping a pass (although I'm sure he did somewhere).

Best I've ever seen

I'd say that Jacobs, Pope, and Sharon are the best players I've seen playing for the BG Falcons. But I came to Bowling Green (from New Zealand) only a year ago, and prior to that I hadn't seen any American football at all, let alone any Falcons games.

Szlachic has to be the best receiver I have seen in the brown and orange. He had unbelievable hands. But what sets him apart for me is that he has two MAC Championship rings to his credit. Same for Erik White. Isn't that how we should ultimately judge a player?

No, I don't think so.
