question about your rival

Post by 1boisebro »

actually, two questions, since the answer's not always the same:

1) who do you consider BGSU's #1 rival?
2) what NCAA team do you hate the most?

i've seen some rants about OSU on here which is why i ask. though, out here, OSU = Oregon State instead of Ohio State, USC = Southern Cal instead of South Carolina, UW = Washington intead of Wisconsin, etc...

UT

Which for us is Toledo...not Texas and not Tennessee :)

UT is our biggest #1 Rival without a doubt. The 2 campuses are less than 30 miles apart, and joined by a major US Highway (I-75). Hence the battle of I-75 :)

As for the most hated team, I hate a LOT of teams. As one of the few that is both a Buckeye & Falcon fan on this site I hate UM & UT about equally, and they're definitely my 2 least favorite teams. I'm sure many on here will say UT & Ohio State as well.

My answer is the same. Though I hate tOSU with the heat of a million suns, nothing compares to the hatred for those Toledo Rockettes. And they are the ones we really really want to beat.

I may think of some other teams that sicken me, but first to mind is always UT. ::puke::

Toledo is our big game, and probably the No. 1 rivalry in the league right now.* We play Thanksgiving week, and ESPN has been airing it usually.

Our other important historical rivalry is Miami. Some background:

-- The Miami-Bowling Green series decided most MAC titles from 1955-65.
-- From 1972-84 or so, we couldn't beat 'em once, leading to the term "Miami Whammy."
-- Miami is the only school in the league with a winning record against Bowling Green.

Miami doesn't consider us their No. 1 rival; they have at one or two other games that are more important. Bowling Green fans probably get up for Miami more than Miami fans get up for Bowling Green.

But it does run both ways to some extent. Whether the game is in Oxford or Bowling Green, a good crowd is usually a given.

I hate Ohio State most. I also have a special dislike for Cincinnati (which is not typical for BG fans).

I dislike arrogance and, in my mind, both programs reek of it.

----
* Other good MAC rivalries: Central Michigan-Western Michigan; Miami-Ohio and Miami-Cincinnati, which is a nonconference series, but more than 100 years old.

The other tidbit about Toledo is that the home team has won (I think) like the last 8 meetings. Toledo attracts a totally different type of person, IMHO, than does BG. It isn't like some rivalries (a la Ohio State and Michigan) where both schools are extremely similar (both extremely full of themselves). Toledo gets pharmacists, engineers and other nerdy majors. BGSU has it's roots in education, a huge business school, the arts, and a lot more cool things like that.

So basically, Toledo: misfits and geeks; BGSU: cool.

That and when I went to BG it was 60% female and 40% male...love those odds. Of course, now the only thing with that ratio is Bruce Gradkowski's wardrobe.

It would be unreasonable to omit Marshall's wandering herd from consideration for most hated NCAA team. Indeed, this could be a universal standard. I seem to remember catching a media release about Marshall's recent visit to Kansas State, where the visitors emphatically left the entire State with that rather redneck feeling Marshall always leaves festering behind. And a few badly thrown bottles.

But not as badly thrown as Marshall's last pass.

i hate OSU the most.

I am an underdog fan and rooting for OSU is like rooting for the yankees. They had all the advantages put in before they started paying all their players.

Well, as long as we're listing most hated schools, I'll throw my two cents in.

Mine are Michigan and OSU - wierd, I know. But, my hatred of these schools is basically because of their hockey fans. I hate Michigan because their fans are the biggest d-bags in all of sport, and I hate Ohio State because, even after having had a hockey team for decades, they are still trying to figure out what all of those guys on the ice are doing with sticks in their hands.

Of course, this hatred does not even come close to the level of hatred that I harbor for UT. They are evil - the instituational manifestation of all that is wrong with the world, if you will. Two little known facts about UT's evil-doing ways:

(1) You won't read it in history books, but the only reason the Cold War lasted beyond 1953 was UT's very existence. The Cold War actually ended not because of Gorbachev's willingness to aggressively pursue detante throughout the 1980's, but because President Reagan in a secret meeting appologized for all of UT's transgressions and pledged to do everything he could to reign in their evil influence on the world. After several years of waiting for some tangible results from his American colleague, Gorbachev finally relented and forgave the U.S. for UT - he realized that no nation on the face of the earth could ever hope to control, or should be blamed for an evil force of that magnitude.

(2) It was actually their mascot that killed Kennedy. There are numerous eyewitness accounts in the back-pages of history books of a blue, very gay looking astronaut skating away from the Book Repository on its heels.

Is that proof enough for you?

1. Toledo
2. Toledo...or more accurately a substantial portion of their fans.
They are the biggest collection of whiny pukes. Every loss is
the result of some nefarious plot against them. We water the field,
Marshall bugged the locker rooms, every decent non conference team
they played last year had way better players and a less stupid coach.
The list of excuses is endless.....
