Another Defense Thread?

Post by BGDrew »

Taking a gander at the Huddle boards, I wondered when the D would realize what everyone was saying about them and come out like men possessed.

If this team doesn't have enough bulletin board material, this D will never get pumped.

Same could be said for Josef Timchenko.

I think our D could end up being very similar to (gasp) UT's last year. An embarassing performance to start the year, but leading to steady improvement throughout they year. I think some of these guys just need more time in game situations. Jamien Johnson and Tim Arnold are both seniors, but they haven't been starters in the past. Antonio Smith is a true freshman playing CB. Sorry for beating the dead horse, but this defense was awful against Wisconsin and average against Ball State. However, I think they will be there when it matters most against Miami and UT in November. Big time scoring and ridiculous offensive stats are great, but defense wins championships. We MUST win the MAC this year. The defense will determine whether that happens or not.

Where are you finding these threads? I think I'm looking in the wrong place.

At risk of sounding naive, I wonder how many players visit the boards? My peer group never had this kind of phenomenon to live with, and, being a rugby player of sorts (retired), I'm not sure that I would have been too keen to peek over the parapet after a couple of my performances. Well, maybe more than a couple, actually. Mmm, and then there was THAT game. Without asking any closet members to "come out", what's the pulse on this reading?

Players aren't supposed to, but I've personally seen them in the labs while doing my rounds with the site open.

i am positive they view the material. but i am also positive that they are not allowed to reply or post any feedback.

i know coaches would view material, but probably never post.

why shouldn't they be allowed to view?

Exactly. Any athlete or coach has the right to see and hear what people are saying. If they weren't allowed to view people's opinions, they wouldn't be able to watch tv (ESPN to Local News), view anything online or look at signs held up in the stadium.

From the perspective of the coaches, forums like these are negative and they would prefer to not taint the minds of the players with comments from individuals that may not have a clue. They would prefer the players focus on the direction they provide them. By the same token, they don't want them getting caught up in media hype or lack of media hype. They would prefer to get it done on the field.

How do I know this? They ran a segment on these types of forums on the Toledo news last year and Ay-Ziggy was one of the sites discussed. Coaches were interviewed and gave their opinion. While they are happy to have fans, they are not thrilled about these sites.
