Something to ponder...

After a day to stew about the loss at Boise, I'm feeling better today. Here is something I thought I'd run by everyone...

Last year, UT started 1-2, 1-0 MAC and won the league title. The Rockets got blasted 63-21 at Minnesota, 63-14 at Kansas and won 42-32 @ EMU.

This year, BG starts 1-2, 1-0 MAC. The Falcons gave Wisky all they wanted 56-42, beat Ball State 40-31 and got manhandled at Boise, 48-20.

I refuse to throw in the towel on what should be a league title year. Yes we have things that need corrected and in a hurry. What happened Wed night is done and ya move on. EVERY team in America not named Southern Cal gets it's butt kicked once a year...even the mighty Buckeyes got drilled by Iowa 33-7 last year. Look what happened to Oklahoma in the "Title Game" last year. It happens. We played a very difficult opponent in a very difficult place to win. I'm done with that game. I have it on tape and I may just tape over it! JK....got to take the bad with the good.

On to Temple...GO FALCONS!!!

I've been saying those same things since the 3rd quarter of the Boise game. It didn't make me any less mad, but I did remember how bad we all thought UT was and how much we all blasted their sorry defense...and then they end up the MAC champions. What a turn around. I think they became a better team because of the adversity they had faced.

Hopefully, this embarrassment will be enough to make our team see that they are not invincible and nothing is a given. I think our defense will reallize that they didn't just get their butts whipped because it was a bigger Wisky that was built for the run, but they got whipped because they have some things that seriously need to be fixed. I think the offense will reallize that those points don't come just from stepping on the field, but you actually have to earn them. I think our players may just finally reallize that they are a TEAM and not the offense and the defense. We have jumped on the defense so much that even the players on offense were buying into the whole us/them concept. I could even hear this same tone in the coaches. With the offense having a bad couple of games, maybe this team can gel again as a "team". The offense needs the defense to make some stops so they don't have to score every possession. The defense needs the offense to move the ball so they don't have bad field position and get a chance to actually rest. This may just be the kick we need to get it into high gear.

GO BG!!! :supz:

So far the only possible fallacy to that comparison is that Toledo Tom might be a better coach than Brandon.

Actually, the big difference may be that the Rockets had a lot of green players on defense. I don't think we can use that as an excuse. We lost starters, but most of the guys on the field had plenty of game time under their belt before the Wisky game - Parks, Thaler, Williams, Cooley, Piepkow, Jordan, Perry, etc.

We too had some youth issues. We lost 28 points in the first 2 games to big plays that were against inexperiance and youth.

Toledo had 14 players on their defensive 2-deep (22 total players) last year that were freshman. That was our biggest problem early in the year.

That said, the fact that Toledo turned it around with a poor DC in Lou West shows that BG could turn it around also. Don't forget you have a great offense that will help the defense a bit as the season goes on.

But if the rest of the defense stepped up, that wouldn't have mattered.

To put it in perspective, think of how many times our defensive backfield got torched last year. In that regard, we are certainly no worse off than we were last year. Having Keon back there made up for it because he was a ballhawk, something we either don't have or don't know we have because other teams are running so much.

I'll say this, I think our defensive backs are playing, as a unit, pretty well. I've said before that I think Perry is playing about as well as I could hope for and all of the DBs are making an awful lot of tackles.

And the difference between "some youth issues" and the sheer volume of young players that rocketfootball points out is significant. That being said, we have a lot of talent (and experience) on the defensive side of the ball. I believe - no, make that expect - that we will turn it all around starting Saturday, Oct. 1.
