Yeah, it's another topic about our defense. But stats don't lie, we are currectly listed #113 out of 119 teams in D-I. We've pretty much got nowhere to go but up from here. If we have any shot at winning the MAC, this figure has got to improve, period. Do I think we are a Top-10 defense? No. But I know we are not a Bottom-10 defense either. Let's pick it up guys. Because if we can post the bad, we can also post the good too and I hope to do that as we hopefully climb from the bottom week by week.

Well, we did play Balls Tate, so we didn't exactly face Murderer's Row. We'll see how we fare against Temple. It might be telling to compare our defense's performance against how the Owls fared against Western and Toledo.UK Peregrine wrote:I'm sorry but stats don't lie. Sure, UT has the 37th best defense in the nation after shutting down the likes of Western Illinois, Western Michigan and Temple. I wonder where BG would be ranked defensively after those three games.

Keep in mind that those stats are solely based on yards allowed per game (LSU is last and everyone knows they have decent defense!!). While that is an important stat, it is just one in a suite that should be used. Others include win/loss record, scoring average allowed, time of possession, turnovers caused/forced, 3rd and 4th down conversions allowed, et cetera. Regardless, I would totally agree that our defense is somewhere around 100-110th worst in I-A. Yes we've played 3 road games and 2 against decent teams, but that is still no excuse for the lackings on defense.
BG played two respectable teams on TV in their home openers and BG was caught with their pants down against Ball state. So i suspsect they were all better prepared than BG.
Well, this is how I feel about defense. If an offense can not run the ball and/or control the time of possesion then eventually the De will wear down and faulter.
2003 BGSU rushes 41 times a game gave up 21 points and controlled time of possession 32 minutes. (won the MAC west)
2004 BGSU rushes 36, gives up 23.5 and time of possession is even at 30mins
2005 BGSU rushes 27 attempts per game giving up 45 points a game and time of possession is 25 minutes.
Our De is losing it in the second half when it appears our offense stalls (other teams making adjustments at half) and the are on the field the majority on the 3rd. We saw the Wisconsin game and the boise game. The De looks impressive early. The O coordinator needs to stop going with the home run every drive. Its effecting the whole team in a negative way. Omars Pass Percentage is lower along with his qb rating. We have 3 capable backs and a big fast qb there is no excuse for not running the ball. In 2001, when BG was doing it with smoke and mirrors, BG had a 3.8 ypc avg. Not a good average, but controlled the clock 33mins and the De only gave up 16.3 points
I know Defense wins championships but a sound running attack controls the game. When we start running the ball our De stats will improve greatly.

reyray: By and large, a good, insightful post. I would submit that saying our defense looked impressive in the first halves against Boise State and Wisconsin is a bit of an overstatement. But your point is valid.reyray82 wrote:The De looks impressive early.
Last year, we ran up the score so fast, teams were forced to play catch up. Now that we can't simply outscore them, our defense is on the field a lot more and that not only wears them out, but gives the opponent more time to exploit weaknesses.
