GameTracker said that Turner is the one that fumbled the opening kick... didn't we learn our lesson putting Pope and Lane back there together, now we've got our backup QB returning kicks!?!? hmmm... maybe gametracker is staffed by CFN-ers today, and they're completely off...

Nope, they got it right. We have Turner on kick retuurn. I mentionslast week how stupid that is. Well, we tried some trickeration on the opening kickoff. Turner starts at the 20, turns and stnads there as the returned with the ball goes by or hands it to him. Well he got whacked as the exchange was happening and the ball went flying. Dumb idea having him on kick return. Dumb idea about thte trick play. And while I'm at it, all of our special teams play is just play stupid. and that is putting it nicely.

Our special teams play needs to get right......and quick. Performances like that WILL cost us games against better offensive teams. If Ohio doesn't shoot themselves in the foot and not get points on that first drive, it's a whole different ball game.

Special teams can inject so much emotion into a team -- we can't give up plays like that on the road or we will get eaten alive. With a bye week this week (kidding), we need to focus whole days of practice on special teams.

Maybe we should hire Spielman as the ST coach. He sure hates that formation....and so do I. We've got plenty of beef up front -- why do we need to resort to gimmicks?

Heck, they could hire me. I figured out three games ago that formation doesn't work. And its not just the splits. The three up guys need to step toward the line, not back. The first block tonigt was identical to the one at Boise. The defender runs right through the line, because of the wide splits, and then jumps just before reaching the second line of blockers/

I saw what I think you mean tonight. I was standing in the end zone for one of our punts.

When our line sets up to snap the ball, they are soooo far apart from each other that someone could position a whole O-lineman in a three point stance between the center and either the guards -- or between either of the guards and either of the tackles.

I was shocked.

When I played high school ball, we set up in a sort of bow-shaped-wall -- so tight that we literally grabbed the leg of the person closer to the center from us. The theory was the rushers might knock us down, but they'd never clamber over us in time to get to the punter.

I suppose that would never work in college ball -- too much speed to zip past the ends.

Still, I can't believe how much room was between our O-linemen on that punt.
