A dumb question from an old man

Post by RobbyFalcon »

I went to the MU-Akron game. There were no kids there because of what I was told is "Fall Break". What the hell is fall break? I've seen it mentioned with respect to BG, but isn't fall break the three days off for Thanksgiving?

Has BG and Miami gone over to the dark side, aka quarters instead semesters?

Fall break?

Color me befuddled. :?

RF,
Join the CLUB! And no, BG is NOT on a Qtr. system.... don't know when they put the "fall break" thing in , but I think it's kind of dumb...they DO start school earlier with the semester ending in Dec., but I don't know why a "break" is needed at this time.

This is relatively new. Students get Monday and Tuesday off for a long weekend. Also get a Friday off for Veterans Day and Wednesday, Thursday, Friday at Thanksgiving. My guess is this helps balance out the schedule since they start the semester on a Monday now.

Back when I was in school, the Fall semester started on Wednesday. And then you got three days off at Thanksgiving. Putting the first week and thanksgiving week together gave you one full week of classes. Since they start on a Monday now, they need to give two days off somewhere in the rest of the schedule to balance it all out, thus Fall Break.

No, they are still on semesters. Fall break is a "new" idea taking hold in many universities. It gives students a 3 or 4 day weekend at about 7-8 weeks into the semester. UK's is set up to correspond with the opening of Keenland race tracks (horses), since that is where most students and faculty are anyways.

BG had a similar situation last week with the OU game, though students showed up fairly well for that game, in my opinion.

I remember when Fall Break meant you took a Thursday night off from studying and went to the Brauthaus for $2 pitchers. Of course we had Winter Breaks and Spring Breaks like this as well. :D

Why is it such a dumb idea to give students a break in the middle of the semester? The university takes thousands of dollars from me every year, i'll take all the breaks I can get.

Since Fall Break was introduced less students drop out after the first year/semester.

As far as semesters/quarters go, OSU is finally considering the concept of semesters.

Spring break is the midterm break in the spring semester.

Fall break is the midterm break in the fall semester, but it's only two days, since there is also Thanksgiving break in fall.

I don't see why it's such a shocking, horrifying idea that students should get a couple days off to cool down from the stress of midterm exams. Just 'cause we don't have to walk to school barefoot, in the snow, uphill both ways....

Yeah... we go a full ten weeks (11 including exams) w/o any kind of breaks. I never have minded much, but I can see how it would affect some students. I believe we get one day off per quarter too. I like it though. We're back from Thanksgiving til New Years so I really can't complain there.

Just goes to show how much OhioU blows. But then Miami does Monday-Tuesday Switch Day. That is only a good idea in the Miami Bubble.

When my mom was at Miami, they went from Quarters to Trimesters to Semesters to Quarters to Semesters. So, she has .75 credits in one subject, and .33 in another.

Thursday and Friday are my "fall break" from MBA classes.

So, I'm going to get wasted on Wed night then drive over to my mother's on Thursday to do my laundry. Won't SHE be surprised.

Rollo83- I am taking a stab here, but the 83 could mean you graduated in 1983. Assuming that, that is the case, then you would have had better breaks than the haus...like Merry Madness as it escalated to its hights in 1985 and ended by 88-89. If memory serves the 85 -87 parties found students as far away as Univ Georgia in attendance. Those Breaks were notable. But one must question the 3 days of recovery after.

I was trying to explain Manville Madness and Merry Madness to some current students working at the bookstore during our recent trip. They didn't get it. My how things have changed. 8)
