Did you know....(according to the media guide)
In 1959, the year BG won the national championship, they didn't have one game with a 100 yard rusher.
The guide doesn't go back far enough to say if there were any 100 yard receiving games, but the top passer, Bob Colburn, threw for "only" 788 yards in nine games. (With 6 TD's, 5 INT)...

That team also had a defense full of 6'5", 330 pound guys that ran 4.2 40's. It's a miracle that anyone scored against them.

This game determined (ultimately) the "Natl. Champion" even though we still had to play and beat OU at the end of the season.... Delaware came in ranked #1, while BG was #2 at the time...
As to ball carriers, we were led by Bernie Casey and Chuck Comer...oddly enough, Bernie was drafted in the 1st round as a WR despite an outstanding career as a RB.... his height made him ideal for the WR position as opposed to a RB.... Jerry Dianiska and Roger Klicman were the primary FB (blocking backs ) on the team, which featured such names as Ron Blackledge, Arch Tunnell, Tom and Jerry Colaner, and Bob Colburn at
QB. How good was this team? EXCELLENT! Individual stats weren't as specactular as todays of course...they just won games...and many of these guys went on to become outstanding high school and college football coaches. (Dave McClain, Larry Smith, Arch Tunnell, Ron Blackledge, Bob Rueblin to name a few).

Great info '61!!! In fact, I just finished a writeup on Blackledge for BGSUsports.com. He was a heck of a baseball player, too!
