Like all of you I was stunned by what happened Saturday. I thought if BG played a bad game we would still win by 7-10 points, and if we played a really bad game we might possibly lose in the last seconds to a field goal. But to lose by 31 to a team that a year ago we beat by 52 points, on our field, is almost beyond belief. I have read many of the topics and posts since the game and I agree with much of what was said. One post said this team has been walking on thin ice for a long time. I have to agree with that assessment. This team has some real serious problems that hopefully can be fixed, even without Omar for a couple of games.
What concerns me the most is that our schedule lined up almost perfectly for a shot at the MAC title game. When Miami lost to Central and then lost to Northern it gave BG a 2 game lead in the East with very winnable games against Buffalo, Western, Akron and Kent coming up. Had BG won those games they would have gone into the Miami game with at least a 2 game lead with 2 to play. More than that BG would have controlled their own destiny. Even a loss at Miami would have allowed us to win the East by beating Toledo. Now, the Miami game becomes a must win. If we lose that game we will be tied with Miami and they would hold the tie-breaker by winning the head to head matchup. BG does not have a good history playing Miami whether home or away and we could have avoided the "must win" situation had we taken care of business Saturday.
The season is by no means lost but this does make things a lot more difficult.
A golden opportunity lost?
