Two sad footnotes on Saturday's game

Post by 1987alum »

 Saturday's game marked the first regular-season loss at The Doyt during Gregg Brandon's tenure, a streak of 13 games. BG had won 20 straight at The Doyt, stretching back to 2001. Blackney had a string of 14 straight home wins at the beginning of his tenure, and went 19 games without losing at home (including a tie). Stolz also strung together 13 home wins before, um, leaving.

 Despite the importance of the game and the designation of Family Weekend, Yahoo! Sports' box score said the attendance was 13,959. Our average attendance stands at 15,866 right now with Akron and Toledo the only home games remaining. With a meager showing against Akron (say 12,000), we'll probably finish with an average of more than 16,000. Adequate, but from from the visions of wall-to-wall orange many had hoped for and predicted.

I swear, maybe my guessing is way off, but I thought we had a lot more than just under 14,000 there for the WMU game. The West side was nearly full and the East side had a decent showing. If our stadium seats just over 23,000 right now, I just can't see where we had nearly 10,000 empty seats for WMU? Plus all the people in the south endzone and the people in the suites, etc. Anyone else agree?

I was shocked to see the number. Absolutely shocked. It seemed like a much bigger crowd.

The stadium felt more full than it did for last year's Western Michigan or Marshall games -- both of which were in 17,000 territory.

Last time I was at a game where they reported 14,000 (Kent State, 2003), it seemed much smaller than it did Saturday.

I wonder if BGSU has changed the way they sell tickets, spreading people out more and making it seem more full than it is.

Yeah, I really can't figure this out. I really think we are being short-changed in our attendance this year, I really do. Now I've seen it where we reported a figure in the past that was way too high, but now it seems like we're reporting them too low. What is going on with this?

What did you think of the crowd at the Ohio game?

You must have been on the West side. If you were on the East side, you would have noticed that the only section on the West that was even remotely close to being full was the players parents area. The student section was woeful. 14,000 equates to about 60% capacity. Sounds about right to me.

I, too, thought there had to be at least 18K there Sat. I thought it was a good, solid crowd.

I'm in my skeptical mode. If we reach 10,000 this weekend after Saturday's debacle, I'd consider it a good showing.

Substantially fewer people on the west side for Ohio than for Western Michigan.

I'm an east sider, so it is tougher for me to judge my side.

I have to agree....driving back Sat night I thought "Will we even get 10K for Akron???" :x

I don't want to answer that question right now.

Well, we will be short one regular since I will be missing the game due to medical reasons.

Actually, I do sit on the East side (I have season tickets over there). I though the West side was about 80 percent full for WMU. But like many have stated, I still think there were more than reported for every game we've had this season. Even the Temple and Ohio games, I thought we had a lot more than reported. Oh well, I'll take wins over attendance any day. If only 10,000 show for Akron, I know I'll be one of them and if BG wins, that's better than 23,000 showing up for a loss. GO BG!!!

For now, the forecast is saying partly sunny and cool. If that holds, you can't expect much better weather for late October in northern Ohio.
