AKRON, Ohio - ZIPSlive hits the airwaves every Thursday at 7 p.m. from the Winking Lizard in nearby Fairlawn. Zips fans are invited to stop by and take part in the fun.
The one-hour weekly call-in radio show gives fans an in-depth look at Zips athletics.
The show can be heard live locally on Radio Free Ohio 1350-AM each Thursday evening with Tommy Gelehrter serving as host for the third-straight year.

Wouldn't it be great to hear over the airwaves "hey can somebody tell that Freak in the back to quiet down!"

Shows at 7, Usually I listen to them putting a positive spin as best as possible on the week that was while commuting home but I will be home earlier tonight and hopefully take some of it in.

I think we are electing you to make a covert op on this scene!

It's a good, Cleveland-based, bar chain.

If there was one nearby I'd be VERY interested in doing the world beer tour, but I like to hit the lizard whenever I'm in downtown C-town.

you could always do it at kelley's island.
the tour is a lotta beer to drink. i've never done it myself, and i don't think that i ever could. i do, however, have a bunch of the beer of hte month mugs/pilsners/pints etc.

If they had a Winking Lizard at Kelley's when I was living over there for the summer (and I was drinking age at the time) I would've. Kelley's is closer than Cleveland, but by the time you pay the ferry it's not exactly a cheap destination! Plus that's only summertime.

The tour is 100 beers, but you get almost a full calendar year to accomplish the feat. Unfortunately you're restricted to picking only one location from which to drink the 100 beers. I used to have some of the beer of the month mugs as well, but they all broke :(

The Lizard in downtown is right next to the Gund, so its great for those of us that like the MAC tourney. Between the Winking Lizard and Great Lakes its hard to beat downtown Cleveland for great beer, IMO.

Hey Freak, I was looking at the Winking Lizard's menu and they're serving Great Lakes Nosferatu right now. I've always wanted to try that stuff. If you do go to the Akron show tonight, will ya grab me a bottle? I'll gladly pay ya back Saturday! It's a big ale, exploding with hops according to the GL website. Never found it around here though :(

Wasn't there a pizza place in BG that used to have some sort of "World Tour of Beers"?

Hammb - I thought I saw the Nosferatu at the Meiers when I was in town.

We always seem to end up at the Winking Lizard on Rockside when we're in Cleveland!

Really!? I'll have to check Meijer...I just don't expect to find good beer there, but you never know! I usually go to Andersons and figure if they don't have something nobody will.

The place in BG you might be thinking of, not a pizza joint, is Easy Street. They do have some kind of beer drinkers award, but I've never tried it. I'm not that hugely fond of Easy Street and the last few times I've been there (both BG & Downtown Toledo) I've had to order 3-4 beers before they finally found one they had. Heck last time they were out of mainstreams like Killians & Newcastle!

Hammb:

The Meijers (Sp?) was across I-75 from The Doyt (not sure if there's another one in town  ) and I'm pretty sure it was there.

Easy Street wasn't around in my day; was it Pisanello's (sp?) or something like that? Geez, my memory is really fading. :?

Campus Pollyeyes always had a good selection imported beer back in the day. I'm not sure if they still do given all of the incarnations of the place.

About a year or so ago Polleyes switched distrubtors and their beer selection suffered a little bit. It's still a nice selection, but as good as it once was.

Agreed. It's Campus Polleyes' selection better than average for BG, but nothing special; they do always have some imports & micros on tap, but not a huge selection of them. AFAIK Pisanello's doesn't even sell beer, but I haven't eaten there in awhile.

I know that BG is a college town, and college kids mostly drink swill, but what I wouldn't give for a GOOD sports bar in town that had a real beer selection. In my opinion there is not a single decent place to watch sports in BG, and none of the bars (outside of Easystreet, see above for my experience) have a good beer selection. Is it too much to ask for a bar to have 7 or 8 HD projectors within viewing range with 100-150 different beers available!? I cannot be the only beer snob sports fanatic in this town! LOL!

That's the only Meijer in town '87, I'll have to check it out and see if they still have the Nosferatu. It's just a big beer with a crapload of hops, I've always heard it described as one of the best beers in the world, but they only sell it for a couple months of the year, and they didn't have it when I was at the brewpub Labor Day weekend :(

I woudl also recommend Stimmel's Market (formerly Tyrell's) on West Wooster for a good out of the ordinary beer selection.

I always thought Brewsters had a decent on tap selection (not great but decent) and always wished they'd put some big screen TVs there. The thing I thought Polleyes had going for it was the litre steins you could get your beer in.

The one thing lexington has going for it is some good bars (can't get subs or breadsticks delivered though). Pizza place UK and I regulary eat at has about 30 on tap (plus a nice pint night, buy the beer on special, get a glass). They also have about another 30 bottle/can beer. There is also a pretty nice german restaurant. Get some schnitzel burgers, shoot pool, watch games, and pick from about 100+ beers. The local sports bar we hang out at after softball games and what not has better beer selection than BG bars too. (plus you can get good bourbon at the bars here :D ) Also we now have 3 large Liqour Barns in which any beer available in this state can be found.
