Direction of Program

Post by 98_BG_GRAD »

There has been a lot of talk on here about the poor on-field coaching and I don't disagree that it has been terrible, for the most part, this year. I have been critical of Coach Brandon in the past, but he has won two bowl games and been to a MAC Championship game. What concerns me the most is the decline of the program under GB. He took over a team that was revitalized by Urban Meyer. He was very successful in his first year, only losing to a very good Ohio State team and Miami twice, arguably the best MAC team in recent memory. Last year, the team was solid and won a bowl game, but still could not win AT NIU or Toledo, where they had a huge first half lead. Now, 2005 and losses to WMU, Akron, another blown 1st half lead at Wisky and a terrible performance at Boise! The way things look, the talent level is not improving and GB is not getting better as a coach. That concerns me going to 2006 and beyond. I think this team has talent and with Omar back next year, we will all think the team can beat OSU, Wisky and Boise and maybe run through the MAC. But, from what I have seen, there is no chance of that happening under this regime. With the success GB has had, I would not say he needs to be let go now, but if things don't turn around in the next 3 games of '05 and in 2006, then it will be time for Mr. Krebs to go in a new direction.

I will continue to wear my Orange & Brown glasses and I think this team can bounce back and win the last three and who knows, may even play for a MAC title. We should all believe that. We are Bowling Green fans. Most of us were around for the end of the Blackney era and stuck by this team. Bowling Green will be back to where we were in 01, 02, 03 and 04. I am just not sure it will happen with the current coach.

I also have real concerns about the direction of this program. I am afraid there is a big difference in the abilities of Urban Meyer and Coach Brandon. Meyer was able to win immediately with players from a losing program. Coach Brandon was able to continue to win in his first 2 years with players largely recruited by Meyer. It seems that with more and more of the team being Brandon's recruits the product on the field has declined. It may be an inability to evaluate talent. I think of Butch Davis when he coached the Browns. A great college coach but turned out to be a lousy evaluator of talent when it came to drafting players. I'm wondering if Coach Brandon and his staff are a little deficient in that area.

It always concerns me when we have a fairly large number of early verbals. If BG was one of the top tier BCS schools that recruits among the top level of talent in the country, early committments would be welcomed. But we largely recruit the 3-star and lower players that the BCS schools may be showing interest in. As the signing period approaches they may not offer that player a scholarship. While it is a bit of a gamble to wait and see if we can get some higher rated players that may commit late, I think it is better to compete for the higher talent and have a lower success rate than go after lower rated players that are not as heavily recruited, but with a higher likelihood of being able to sign them. It is a thin line in trying to attract the best talent you can while not becoming so unrealistic that you devote too much of your time and effort on recruiting players you have little hope of signing. That is where evaluating talent becomes so important, especially for the BG's of college football. There are over 50 players from MAC schools in the NFL who obviously were talented enough to start for most if not every college team in the country. It is recognizing and developing these diamonds in the rough that our coaches need to be able to find.
It is very possible BG will not win another game this season. I hate saying it but unfortunately the way they are playing now it could happen. The coaches need to take a close look at where BG was from 2001-2004 and where they are now and ask why.
