According to the game announcers on ESPN, BG controls it's own destiny and will be MAC East champs if they win tonight AND beat Toledo next week. This is news to me.

I don't know what kind of news that is. Look at the standings. We have two losses along with Miami, OU and Akron both have 3. If we beat Miami and then Toledo, we have two losses, and everyone else has at LEAST 3 losses. We win the East. Ahem. We are the "Beasts of the East." 8)
It's true ...

If we hang on tonight (can't imagine blowing a 29-0 halftime lead, but I'm not jinxing us) and beat Toledo next week, we will be 6-2 in the MAC. The best record the other teams in the East can have is 5-3.

does it really matter though? we'd have the tie breaker with Miami wouldn't we?

We could lose to Akron if we lose to Toledo. akron beat us

No it's true...we could have clinched but OU crapped out against Akron.
If we maintain against Miami (its at the half), Akron beats Kent, and Miami beats OU, and we lose to Toledo....what's the 3rd tiebreaker again???
I know, just win against Toledo, etc etc. But we might watch Akron and all 352 of their fans at a Bowl game

Since Akron won today, if we lose another game, don't they go ahead of us via the tie-breaker?

It is Akron that we need to worry about.
If we lose against Toledo and Akron beats Kent (pretty much a given) then Akron will be in the MAC Championship game against Toledo (most likely).

Whats the second tiebreaker????
Miami beat Akron
akron beat us
WE beat Miami
We need the second tiebreaker

That scenario would take a Kent victory over Akron, that won't happen. We must beat Toledo

As I gaze upon the MAC East standings, that would be true. Sorry for being seriously out of the loop for the last week or so. I was forgetting that Akron lost last week.

2nd tiebreaker is Head to Head where we're all still even.
I think the 3rd tiebreaker is record vs. WEST division opponents, and we're not good there

we are not losing to Toledo.
