Bowl talk...

From the Toledo Blade
BOWL REPS: Representatives of both the Motor City Bowl and the GMAC Bowl were in attendance last night.
Talk before the game centered on UT's interest in playing in the GMAC in Mobile, Ala., had it clinched the MAC West title.
The Rockets' bowl future is murky, however, in light of the Northern Illinois win.
It appears if UT had won last night, they would've been offered the GMAC bowl. I wouldn't be surprised if they head out to our game next week. They usually like to select early, since their game is much earlier than the other bowls. They need time to market the game.

What are the odds that we get the immediate invite to the GMAC if we win Tuesday night?
I'm thinking low since WMU/NIU play the next afternoon, and there would be no harm for them to wait less than 24 hours to know the identity of the exact participants in the MACC game.

A agree. I think with a win on Tuesday we are pretty safely in a bowl, bit I doubt we will know until the MACC game.

I would welcome a return to Mobile for the GMAC. CBS Sportsline has us playing Tulsa down there. I am not as excited about playing Iowa or Minnesota in Detroit. I would think that we would have a better shot at beating Michigan State than any of other bowl-eligible Big Ten teams.
Lets take care of the Rockets first and then we can speculate.
Well said...

I was hoping we might get an invite to the Motor City after whipping the Rockettes Tuesday night, but I am guessing the Motor City will wait and see if Western beats NIU and they would love to have a Michigan school in Detroit. It would also be my assumption that if NIU and BG play in the MACC, that BG goes to Detroit and NIU to Mobile. Any thoughts?

I think you've got it about right.
If I were the GMAC, I'd take Northern Illinois over us this year. The Huskies are a good team, the trip will be new for them, and they've done a great job with home attendance.
Only way we end up in Mobile is if Western Michigan wins the West and we grab the other bowl slot.

I sorta like the idea of BG alternating between the two bowls every year anyway. Doesn't get "stale" that way.

Mobile to me is a "better" bowl, but I like the proximity of the MCB.
I'm not going to get picky -- I'm happy to be bowling if we do get there.

Sage words.

For us to bowl three years in a row is something we never would have imagined five years ago, so I'll take it anywhere. Let's hope we can finish the job and make it happen. I don't want to start anything, but just remind people that you have to win the MACC to get an automatic bowl bid. Winning your division doesn't do it.

That's worth keeping in mind.
I like knowing as much as the next guy whether or not we can back into the MAC title game, even by losing to Toledo.
But backing in -- and then losing -- would leave Bowling Green 6-6. The Falcons wouldn't even be eligible for a bowl game at that point, much less desirable.

I agree. NIU would be a nice snag for the GMAC Bowl. After NIU beat Bama back in 2003, lots of folks in the state started following NIU a bit to see how they did.

Is that right? I thought the NCAA ruled a team must have a winning record in an 11-game regular season this year. I assumed a 6-5 team would be bowl eligible despite the outcome of a championship game. Does anyone know for sure concerning this season?
Next year however, a 6-6 team would for sure be allowed to get into a bowl game though, correct?
