High point of BG program in last 20 years?

Post by bgou »

I am not a frequent poster so this will probably diminish this entry in the eyes of many but I have been a fan for 30 years.

I think many of us thought that the program was at its zenith the past four years but I don’t believe this to be the case. I had high hopes, but think in retrospect we were better during the early Blackney years and the end of the Stoltz years.

At the beginning of the season I thought BG football was in the position to continue the evolution of our program. I believe we are regressing in the past 2 years and will continue on a downward spiral. There was a passion with Meyer that is lacking now and I don’t think Brandon is capable of restoring it. He is a coordinator wearing a headset.

It is my contention that it will be harder to assemble a more talented offensive team than what has existed in the past four years and there seems to be little inclination to develop the other facets of the game. Harris and Jacobs don’t fall off of trees but we were fortunate to get them. I doubt this trend will continue.

At this point, we are the University of Houston with a mildly entertaining offense that is backed up by nothing. 6-5 will be the expectation rather than a disappointment. It is a shame we have been unable to capitalize on what has been achieved.

Hard to argue with much of that. This team had too much talent to be 6-5.

This by far the most talented 6-5 BG team I've ever seen....there was just something missing this year. We saw it in the 4th qtr against Akron and we saw it again tonight. The opportunities were there to take control of those games (and thus, the season) but we just didn't get it done.

I think the coaching staff is really going to have to chew on that going forward.

just didn't seem like the guys wanted it enough... i dunno. i'm just really dissapointed. i don't know who to blame... the players or the coaches or what, but something went wrong this season. i was honestly so pumped up before the season started that i thought there might actually be a chance that we would go undefeated... and we barely made it over .500

Good point on the Akron comparison--there are great similarities.

Given all of that, I think it falls squarely on the coaching.

The high point of BGSU football in the last 20 years was the California Raisin Bowl Victory in 1991.

Really, it was -- and now look at how Fresno State put a scare into USC....

Always a good team the FSU...

I think it was 2003. 2-1 against the Big Ten? It was unimaginable during the best of the Blackney or Stolz eras.

THAT was an amazing game. Easily the finest game I ever saw. The final hurried pass bounced 10 yards from where I was standing.

I went freaking nutz.

Winning the Las Vegas bowl after being down at halftime...and that Beautiful Slachek (sp) catch. It was awesome.

Beating KEntucky with Meehan going up and getttin it done.

The Miami Monsoon and the GMAC monsoon.

PURDUE! NORTHWESTERN-twice!

Brian McClure's last year and finally beating Toledo.

Great games!

I think it is about heart to an extent and it's nice to see the only two empassioned displays coming from seniors on the sideline, but at some point, shouldn't Brandon be in that role? Sharon gave a pep-talk to the defense before the huge Parks sack on fourth down, I believe and then Sanders gave a Ray Lewis-esque plea right before overtime. It would be nice if our coaching staff showed a pulse every once in awhile as well.

Well if Jacobs is healthy all season, you guys have at least 8 wins.

From a member of both teams. Couple Corrections
1991, Kevin O'Brein sacked Mark Barsotti on the last play of the Cali Bowl
1992, we were up 28-3 at half time, had a melt down, and scored the winning touchdown with 22 seconds left.

Maybe I am biased, but the 901 & 92, back to back MAC titles is pretty important, and IMOP the Highpoint of the last 20 years.

Offense wins games. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!

THE difference between the last four/five years, and the 91-92 seasons.

Well, he only missed three games and we won one of them, so it would be at most 8 wins. Western was just coming on, and we could easily have lost to them. Don't forget, we barely beat Buffalo.
